asiancup2007
Is it possible to hire a gps unit in thailand? I'll be hiring a vigo and touring for 3 weeks. I've got a map(helpful) and a thai gf(geography impaired) would a gps just be more hassle?

maprao
Why not buy a cheap one like the Street Pilot I2 I3 between 11000 and 14000 Baht. Then you have it forever. Only the price of a few days rental for the car you are considering hiring anyway. I agree there is a market for rentals. Have your own then you can buy maps to use it all over the world. Better option I think. GPS's have many facilities you can personalise it the more you use the more useful it becomes. Tanuat
Hi, I am using Thai GF and GPS Navigation now for 3 years in Thailand. I can definetely assure you the GPS means by far less hassle than the GF . I am a consultant in Geoinformatics and and even though I do not have a viable business here, I sell and rent out various GPS Navigations Systems occasionally just for fun. Have a look at the best performing system offered by GARMIN and ESRI Thailand. I know a bunch of GPS- and computerfreaks here in Thailand who might help you to install the Garmin Software on your PDA, handheld. This software offers Menus, key input and voice output in all European languages. We can also give recommendations for other GPS Navi Systems including built in car devices and alike. Just contact via email. Rgds. Alex

JimsKnight
Or you could just use a map and someone to map read. Good as though GPS is, its not infallible.
Gary A
Or you could just use a map and someone to map read. Good as though GPS is, its not infallible. I have in the past spent MANY hours looking for street signs or a landmark trying to figure out where I am. The map is useless if you are lost. The Garmin knows exactly where you are at and tells you how to get to where you want to go from where you are at. I have found out the hard way that just trying to go around the block seldom works here.

I am with you on this one the GPS tells you where you are and recalculates routes after wrong turns. No comparison to map reading. It is infallible unless the owners USA DOD switch it of or introduce errors into it. Only done in times of conflict and even then differential GPS caters for that. otherwise you know where you are down to a few meters. Tanuat
...these remarks on reading a map can only derive from sort of folks who stem vehemently against technical progress even though it can bring a lot of advantage for the average user…

Cuban
How much would it cost to hire a GPS with Thai maps for a week? Would I get a simple instruction guide too?
Tanuat
How much would it cost to hire a GPS with Thai maps for a week? Would I get a simple instruction guide too? ...for one week between 1200 and 1500 Baht depending on model (all Garmin GPS) and platform (Nuvi, Zumo, Streetpilot, PDA based solutions). Please bear in mind that we do not have devices in abundance available thus a reservation should be made early prior your arrival. There are quick guides available. Best Rgds. Cheers Hi, the prices of built in GPS devices with Garmin technology plus Car Audio System (Kenwood and alike) plus DVD screen start at around 70K B. and can reach triple of that amount and more depending on your preferences for Audio devices and screen technology (data input either by touchscreen or remote control). This is a bit of sophisticated stuff and requires more detailed consulting as there are some pros and cons for each solution to be considered.
