PM details Thailand's march towards 'knowledge society'

BANGKOK: -- Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra yesterday opened the nation's ICT Expo with a vision of the Thailand transforming itself into a knowledge-based society, while robots showcased national inventiveness by wooing visitors with a traditional Thai dance.

Taking the stage along with the four two-foot 'Curion' robots to make his speech marking the official opening of ICT Expo 2004, the prime minister described the event as an important step for Thailand on the road to a knowledge-based society driven by information technology.

Expressing optimism that information technology would help close social divides, he said that it would also help to get rid of complex organizational bureaucracy.

The ICT Expo is designed to show Thailand's ICT potential to international investors, while also encouraging young Thais to take a greater interest in the latest global advancements in information and communications technology (ICT).

The event is expected to attract over 100,000 visitors before its ends on 8 August.

Praise for the expo came thick and fast yesterday, with Mr. Thana Thiera-achiriya, Director of the DTAC telecommunications giant, describing this year's ICT EXPO as the best ever, which would demonstrate Thailand's regional potential as an ICT leader.

However, he conceded that Singapore would continue to hold number one spot in the region, with its annual Communicasia Festival.

But at the same time, he noted that Thailand's mobile phone user base was considerably larger than that of Singapore, and that as a result Thailand had the potential to become a future leader in the exhibition of communications technology.

Does anyone know if there are any bargains to be had at this show? I need to get a few things before the PC gets off the slow boat (UPS, etc.) so I was wondering if I should go to the show at the weekend or just head down to Pantip.

Nothing special there....they trying to become an ICT regional hub, but have no promotional material in English...amazing Thailand. However if you have kids it can be nice place to visit due to all the free comp games.
