Digital Camera Repair Shop

Featured Replies

Got pushed in the swimming pool at a party with my Cannon Ixus 70 digital camera in my pocket. Ive taken it to a repair shop in the basement of Tucom. They say the Printed Circuit Board and LCD screen need replacing and have quoted me 3800 Bhat which is about half the cost of the camera.

A few questions if anyone knows:

Is 3800 Bhat a reasonable price?

Would the camera be as good as new with the repairs done?

Has anyone used this repair shop before?

Are there any other repar shops around?

Cheers.

Consumer grade digital cameras are not really cost effective to repair in my opinion. The camera by all accounts is excellent but is sold for less than 6,000 baht in the US (although I know it is more here). I have had one camera repaired in Thailand (old style) and it failed shortly thereafter. It is not likely to be "as good as new" done by a non Canon repair shop (which it sounds as if you are using).

In general I would say for a consumer camera its often more expensive than its worth but...

My brother has twice broken his cannon ixus out of warranty and twice had it sent to BKK repaired (new screen and a case) and both times cannon charged him something ridiculous like 200 baht.. and it was back to his home in 5 days.. Hes floored by that service (and has just bought a cannon DSLR in part thanks to that experience)

Find the cannon BKK address and get a Thai to call and get a repair return number..

Cheers LivinLOS, at that cost its well worth the effort.

On a general level here,

I would always recommend taking any camera or electronic item back to the makers

service centre, especially in Thailand. The local guys will scratch their heads, make promises,

then after weeks of waiting, claim they cannot get the parts. Whereas the manufacturers

centre will have the job done in a few days.

This has been my experience several times.

I actually found one independent shop in the Chiang Mai Land area where the owner appears to know what he is doing. He replaced an aperture ring that had broken the tab on my Minolta 700si. That required dismantling the camera, reassembling with a new ring and making the needed adjustments so that it focused properly. While I was in his shop I noticed someone had entrusted an expensive medium format Pentax to his care. I have had no need to use his services for my digital equipment though he claimed it was easier to repair digital than modern autofocus analog cameras. My one experience with him was positive though.
