I am thinking about obtaining a retirement visa in exchange for my existing 'O'.

I know that I have to hold 800000 Baht in a Thai bank account for at least 3 months prior to applying. However, I am not sure

if my wife also has to hold a similar amount or can the one amount be held jointly? I have received conflicting advice

and understand that the rules may have changed yet again. I would be grateful for any advice.

Cheers

The latest info I know is that your non-Thai wife can qualify with you on that single chunk of 800K. To be certain, just call or visit your local immigration office. You would be going for an extension based on retirement, not a retirement visa. Your current visa type O would stay the same.

Thanks for the info. I really didn't want to tie up another 800K!

There are more than a few threads discussing requirements for a retirement visa and extension in the Visas section, and lopburi is, frankly, the man to ask.

I agree. But your immigration office has even more authority than him, yes? We still have many cases where different offices are doing different things.

I'm in a similar position. As SBK mentioned Lopburi is the man to help. But just let me mention, that Samui immigration, as any other immigration office, can interpret the rule differently.I spoke to 3 different people here & got 3 different answers.

As I far as I understand is as long as you can produce a translated copy of marriage certificate, you only need 1 x 800,000.00 Baht. That was the last answer I got & mind you this is how I interpreted the rule 4 years a go.

I advise you to get to immigration & speak to Khun Nok,he is the one that makes sure all your paper work is right before submission. Now he is the one that told me that, but before he was singing a different tune.

Good luck.

Thanks everyone! I will seek out Khun Nok and will let you know what happens!
