okok....no comments on backups please.... :D ...this post has been written while I was performing the steps below on the other comp. Read it now as a how-to :D

There are two remaining problems in the bottom of this post, help is much appreciated! :D

Following configuration: HDD 0 has drives C: D: E:

There USED to be a Linux partition that is no longer there, however the boot menu still pops up upon start-up. As the comp is running 24/7 I never really bothered.

C: is rather small and contains nothing but the operating system.

C: ran out of space, so I decided to run Partition Magic, a program that on my comp never failed to do what it is supposed to do, snip a bit off E:, move E: to the right, D: a bit to the right and extend C:

Reboot the comp and it says "error 22".

Run Partition Magic Rescue CD, no avail.

Run the XP Installation CD - it does not detect an existing installation (which I hoped for repair) but goes straight into new installation. This works, so apparently Partition Magic performed the tasks (otherwise there would not be enough space...).

Upon reboot I get two XP Installations to chose from, and I choose the old one.

Partition Magic comes up and performs a batch task that gets aborted with error 1529, data mismatch.

Automatic reboot. Et voila! I get back into my old system.

:o

But wait.....cannot press the start button or anyting in the bottom bar. Get only this error sound.

Restart again. Same propblem. Clean up disk C: (which is still full thanks to Bill's garbage can....)

Restart...same problem...the "plong" sound and I cannot click the start button or anything else on the bottom bar. Log off user, log in again, it works. Reproduced this 2 or 3 times.

And: How to get rid of this boot menu without screing up the system once again?

Normally you would have an file named Boot.ini at C:/ root! If you have, you can edit this file with Notepad and delete the menu entrees which you don't want!

And next time didn't use Partition Magic but Acronis Disk Director instead!

error 22 sounds like the grub is mess up.  If you had a dual boot with linux it would BIOS would use that or LILO before ether the linux or windows if selected.  You can save it most likly, but I am not expert enough to know the commands you need.  Check in the forum of the linux distro you are were using and repair the loader.

it was a grub error, indeed!

Anyways, the Linux partition had to give way to E: earlier as my music collection needed a new home...will try Linux again after added another HDD. There were other problems that would take this thread too ar off track.
