MiniVDO: More trees were planted in tribute to HM the King’s 80th Birthday Anniversary.

80 baby mango trees were planted in the Phuket Governor’s residence compound on Saturday as part of the Interior Ministry’s officers spouses ‘Planting trees for HM the King’ in celebration of his 80th Birthday Anniversary. The activity was also to promote awareness and participation in a Global Warming Reduction campaign.

A local family in Paklok sub-district of Phuket’s Thalang district was handed over a new home under the Department of Local Administration’s project to dedicate houses for people who are in need for each community nationwide. The hand-over ceremony was carried out at the same time nationwide which was live televised by Television Channel 11. In Phuket a total of 21 homes were built and given to those who are in need with a total budget of around 2.14 million baht.

Active campaigns into schools and the public places like Big C super store for HIV AIDS prevention was arranged in recognition of the World AIDS day on December 1st. The alarming data shows that students in their junior high school ages between 14 – 15 years old are found to be at risk for the disease, prompting public health officials to focus on the group as well. On the day free condoms were given out with educating information on the disease and its prevention having young people participating. December 1st is designated as World AIDS Day with this year’s theme still ‘Stop AIDS, Keep the Promise’. Phuket is ranked 3rd on the country’s HIV infected after Ranong and Samut Prakarn. One major factor for the disease spread is sexual intercourse without condoms.

Prince of Songkhla University, Phuket Campus is inviting the general public, and students to visit and participate in many activities arranged during its ‘PSU Open Week’ to be held during December 6-8th at the PSU campus in Kathu district of Phuket. The 3 day event will feature different interesting activities, academically and entertaining performances in the evening. These include exhibitions on various interesting subjects from the university’ students including HM the King’s philosophy of self sufficiency economy principle, IT and environment, hotel and hospitalities, as well as students’ international Food and Beverage booths for visitors to enjoy. Krabi organizes a Big Cleaning Day on December 4th in respect to HM the King.

All public, private organizations, local government and schools are taking part in the Krabi Big Cleaning Day scheduled to be held on December 4th as part of the campaign to have people’s participation to do good deeds for their communities in tribute to HM the King’s 80th Birthday Anniversary on December 5th this year. Coinciding with the national Thai Environment Day, people are encouraged to tidy and clean up their premises, either homes or offices, plus to keep the front part and landscape tidy and pleasant.

MiniVDO: Quality School International held their Fun Runs on Saturday.

The Quality School International or QSI Phuket campus held their annual Fun Runs with trophies and medals for the school winners and all participants, plus prizes from many generous sponsors for a raffle & auction, to raise funds for the non-profit American run school. 83 young and old students from QSI and other local schools lined up with parents and friends for the 1 kilometre runs, in 2 age groups. Even dogs and kindergarden kids, and old retiring parents managed to complete the race in the afternoon heat, with times ranging from 3 to 10 minutes. 58 runners went on the 6 kilometre run around the perimeter of Bang Wad Dam in Kathu. They benefited from the shade and cool winds to enjoy the winding route. The young winner strode ahead to win in about 25 minutes. But times didn’t really matter, as most were happy just to finish the course. The Director of QSI Alan Siporin thanked the participants, supporters and Patong Hospital, and announced the school’s recent accreditation in USA. The winners for 1st, 2nd & 3rd places got their medals. One student Khan, aged 9, also donated 20,000 baht in sponsored funds to the school.

MiniVDO: Italian and British athletes won the men and women’s divisions of the 14th Laguna Phuket Triathlon.

On Sunday 2 December, starting at 7am which was earlier than previous races, approximately 740 tri-athletes, including 22 professional athletes from overseas, together with 60 Corporate Challenge Relay teams, began the 14th Laguna Phuket Triathlon presented by Thai Airways, the Tourism Authority of Thailand, and Herbal Life for the relay. Some even jumped the gun, officially started by the Vice Governor of Phuket, such was their eagerness to get underway, into the new swim course of 1180 metres in the warm sea, then a 620m swim across the cooler lagoon, where the early leaders were an Italian and a Canadian not far behind. Then they transferred to bikes for a 55 kilometre route up to the airport and then down the main Thepkrasatri road, where we saw 4 leading riders from Germany, Italy, & Australia whizzing past. Many riders followed at full speed, as the roads were cleared by police and assisted by many volunteers at water stations. After the bike rides, they ran 12 kilometres through the Laguna Phuket hotel compound, along with about 300 Fun Runners over 6km, and the winners were joined by the baby elephant mascot at the finish line. The men’s category winner was Massimo Cigana, from Italy in a time of 2 hours 31 minutes 46 seconds, followed by Richie Cunningham of Australia. The women’s category was won by Liz Blatchford of Great Britain in a time of 2 hours 42 minutes 24 seconds, followed by Miranda Carfrae of Australia. We will have full interviews with all 4 of them in tomorrow’s program.

Now we talk to Christian Eschenburg, Skipper of the ‘Princess Anna’ Sunsail Odyssey 35, who won in 2004 & 2005 the Phuket King's Cup Sunsail One-Design category, where each boat is exactly the same dimensions. One of his 8 man crew is an Olympic Gold Medalist from 1984 in Los Angeles, as he tells us more overlooking the Kata Yai bay with his yacht in the distance: …....
