Martian
Not true, almost all states are "employment at will" states. Therefore the employee or employer has the right to terminate the relationship without cause and without consequences. I know, it happened to me, I was terminated without cause at the end of April after 22 years of employment and my lawyer said there was no recourse as my state is an employment at will state. So, I accepted the severance package (which my lawyer said they were under no legal obligation to provide) and am getting on with my life. BTW, I only received one week's salary for every two years of employment, maximum 10 weeks severance pay, so I maxed out before receiving the full 11 weeks. Not even close to compensating me for my contributions to the company, not to mention my loyalty and the sacrifices I and my family have made over the years, but that is indeed the real world so beware.
