Just thought that this might be a little bit of fun, and would be interesting to see the differing selections of the esteemed and knowlagable members.

Basic rule - Pick a First Eleven, five subsitutes and a manager and give a reason.

Okay here goes:

GK - Peter Scmeichel (Denmark) - What can be said, he was a big motherf$%#er, but absolutley brilliant at organising his defence and pulling off stupendous saves. Score a couple of goals as well.

RB - Carlos Alberto (Brazil) - A full back that was really one of the first real wing backs. Scored a few goals as well, and Captained a pretty useful Brazilian SIDE.

CB - Bobby Moore (England) - Cool, calm and the perfect defender. Somew of his tackling was sublime, and he never loked like he was in any rush.

CB - Franz Beckenbauer (Germany) - Another cool, calm cutomer, and a real footballer.

LB- Paolo Maldini (Italy) - Has done it all, and can pretty much play anywhere at the back. Probably prefers playing in the centre, but he'll have to make do with left back.

LM - George Best -(Northern Ireland) -The complete flawed genius, but what a fantastic player. Goals and skill, and the a great drinking ability. The only player in this team to have destroyed two livers.

CM - Duncan Edwards - (England) -Two footed, built like a brick shithouse. Even Bobby Charlton was in awe. A bit before my time, but I'll take what mrtoad senior said about him as a good enough reference.

CM - Michel Platini (France)- Maybe a shock, but he was a great passer of the ball, and also had a pretty good strike rate. I thought about Charlton, but Platini gets the nod.

RM -Garrincha (Brazil) - The fact that he had several physical handicaps, but went on to be such a great player, who is only secon to Pele in Brazillian football says a lot. Two footed, faxt and a great dribbler. Would probably have a good drink with George.

CF - Pele (Brazil) - The greatest footballer ever? Depend if you are Argentinian. Strong, fast, skilfull and good in the air. Scored a few goals too.

CF - Eusebio (Portugal) - Another very talented footballer. Lots of goals, ohysically strong and probably the first prominent African player, although he represented Portugal.

12 - Johan Cruyff (Holland) - Vision, skill and an attituder. Certainly one of the greats, could play just behind the strikers or out front.

13 - Ferenc Puskas (Hungary) - Built like a bulldozer. The English didn't take him seriously, until he totally destroyed them. 84 goals in 85 international games.

14 - John Charles (Wales)- Why not? Could play at the back or up front. Played succesfully in Italy, not many Brits have done that.

15 - Bobby Charlton (England) - Goals, from 30 yards, powerful and skillful. George Best say he could beat players better than him. Scored planty of goals.

16 - Alfredo Di Stéfano (Argentina,Colombia and Spain) - Yes, he played for three National teams. Another prolific goalscorer.

Manager - Alex Ferguson - I'm biased as a United fan, but you can' argue with his track record. I think he would like some of these players though.

Waterboy - Diego Maradona - He doesn't get in the squad as he is a cheat, but it would be good to see him running around with the water bottles. :o

So, what do you guys think?

Rivalinho the brazillian playmaker should be there?

Well, why don't you post up a team.?

There's no right or wrong. It's all about opinions.

.......if I think too much I 'll get a headace ......I' will stick with your team and replace Platini with Rivalinho....p.s. .....and Cruyff in the starting line up instead of Eusebio

Do you mean Roberto Rivelino from 1970 etc? The one with the 'atomic freekick'! Good choice I would also pick Franz Beckenbauer over Maldini because he was a more complete player. I would also have Geoff Hurst in partnership with Gert Mueller (spelling? ) in there as well. Bill Shankley would be the coach with Ron Greenwood as director of football. :o

Beckenbauer is there, with Maldini at left back. Rivelino was a great player as well, it's not easy to actually chose a team as there are quite a few that have to be left out.

A well thought out Team there Toady, couldn't really better it.

Except for this

Manager - Alex Ferguson - I'm biased as a United fan, but you can' argue with his track record. I think he would like some of these players though.

Apart from Man United where he has had dosh galore to spend for decades, what has he ever achieved elsewhere?

This team of the top of my head , an attacking 4-3-3 . I'm not including any of the players mrtoad has already selected to make it a bit interesting and ( barring my full backs ) only retired players:

1. GK - Gordon Banks .... world cup winner and still played with one eye !!

2. RB - Cafu ... plays right back the right way

3. CB - Franco Baresi ... probably Italy's greatest defender , and that's saying something

4. CB - Marcel Desailly ... wasn't nicknamed the "ROCK" for nothing

5. LB - Roberto Carlos ... unstoppable surging down the left , and not bad at free kicks

6. CM - Didier Deschamps ... every team needs a " water carrier " , and he was the best

7. CM - Zinedine Zidane ... when great players talk about how good you are , you must be !

8. CM - Zico ... a genius

9. ST - Kenny Dalglish ... the King

10. ST - Gerd Muller ... an absolute goal machine

11. ST - Maradona ... the best ever

12. GK - Lev Yashin ... iron curtain

14. CB - Ron Yeats ... colossus

15. Mid - Roy Keane ... begrudgingly

16. ST - Romario ... born to score goals

17. ST - Paulo Rossi ... number 1 target man

Manager - Bill Shankley

Didn't Gordon Banks lose his eye after the world cup? Marcel Desailly, not in the same class as Bobby Moore but not a bad squad of players and Ron Yeats would certainly 'park the bus' in front of the goal. :o

Yeah Keddy , Gordon Banks did lose his eye a long time after the World Cup , but he still played :D .

I agree Moore was better than Desailly but mrtoad had already picked him first :D .

Can't fauly any of those selections Scouse. I had considered Banks and Yashin for goalkeepers, but having a bit of a bias towars Scmeichel being an Ex-United players. The other one I though about was Baresi, but he would have been on the bench so I picked John Charles for his versatility.

Roy Keane was a great player too, and maybe a little better than Deschamps?

Maradona, yeah he was one of the greats, but also a complate <deleted>. :o

I must admit toadie at first it was a surprise to see you had Scmeichel in goal but then I remembered your a manc :D .

I agree that Keane was probably a little bit better than Deschamps but he never won a world cup and is also a manc :D .

I also agree that Maradona was a tw#T :D , but through shear genius he has to be in any team ever selected :D .

In my copy of Bobby Charlton's "Book of Soccer" published in 1960 he selects the follwing team, electing not to include any Manchester Utd player:-

Bert Trautmann (Machester City)

Djalma Santos (Brazil), Nilton Santos (Brazil)

Bozsik Hungary), John Charles (Wales), Dave Mackay (Sc0otland)

Julinho (Brazil), Kopa (France), Di Stefano (Argentina), Sekularac (Yugoslavia), Gento (Brazil)

Note no reserves on the bench though he does make mention of wanting to include Tom Finney & Stanley Matthews.

It would be interesting to compare it with a team that he would select now.

He'd probably keep it similar but with a few changes.

Micah Richards (Man City)

Elano (Man City)

Richard Dunne (Man City)

The only other player he might add with City connections would be Denis Law.

I agree, but couldn't bring myself to include a drug cheat in my team. In the end his reputation for sportsmanship means I would be a hypocrtye to include him. Mexico 1986? :o

Okay, well maybe Joey Barton. He talks a good game, if nothing else. :D
