Is There A Way To Access Smart Parameters Of A Hdd In An External Enclosure?

Featured Replies

Hi,

Yesterday I bought a 500 GB WD HDD, and put it in a USB enclosure. As anticipated it is running quite hot, but I would like to know how hot exactly. Is there a software which can access SMART information of a HDD in an external enclosure?

I bought a Seagate 500 GB HDD a couple of days ago, and an external USB enclosure (Philips SPD5310CC). My enclosure comes with a small fan with an on/off switch, but it sounds like one of those old American police sirens when it's on, so I don't use it. Instead, I've put the enclosure where it gets a lot of air from a regular room fan. It feels cool to the touch, but I will be following this thread with interest.

As far as I am aware you can not access the SMART info of any Hard Disk through a USB connection.

You would have to plug it into an IDE channel and then run the WD software to the setting you wish and then move it back into the enclosure, I'd suggest for use in an external enclosure that you do not optimize performance but instead set it to a more reliable setting thus reducing the chances of overheating, data loss etc.
