Is it possible to obtain a birth certificate of a Thai National who is our grandaughter. She is two years old but there is very little contact with the Thai mother, due to her having a new British boyfriend.

Many thanks

Might help if you give us a bit more info.

Presume she is half thai, what is the other half?

Who has custody, thai mum or father? And if non thai dad is there any legal document declaring legal custody?

What country is the child living in?

In what country was the birth? (so if born in thailnad presume there is already thai cert so you wnat copy of that or do you want to register birht in another country & get bc from there too?)

With this info we may be able to direct you better.

You would need to find out where she was born then go to the hospital and make a formal request for a copy of the BC.

Not sure what your standings are as grandparents. I assume it was your son. Is his name on the BC ?Where is the kid living? I was again assume Thailand as without BC you could not obtain a passport.

otherwise i would think u have nothing to show any relationship. Sorry

Definetly need more info from ya.

Many thanks your prompt replies,

The child has Thai birth certificate, but has a British name, and was originally registered with fathers name, then the mother changed the childs name back to her name, as they were never married. We do have a translation of the birth certificate, but would like an original. We do not wish to use the certificate for anything, we would just like an original for the Family Tree. The child is currently living in Thailand.

We were under the impression that only one BC could be obtained, is this correct, or could our son go to the hospital where the child was born and request a duplicate?

There is no custody arguments, the child is being cared for by the mother, and the father was paying maintenance, but the mother and new boyfriend cancelled this.

Could he have any rights in Thailand to access?

AFAIK there is no way to obtain a new bc. But consulting a family lawyer in Bangkok & proper legal documentation being put in place will help to ensure his parental rights & that visitations are covered.

Just did a google on family law in bangkok & got this link.

Best of luck. Contrary to a lot of runours, Thai law is actually quite fair on custody if things are done properly & legally, the mother wil usually get custody if no abuse is present but the courts are also usually fair to fathers who wish to have access.

Hi;

If ur sons name is on the bc as the father then he can go to the hosptial and request a COPY.

only one original is ever given.

But just have them stamp it.

You didn't say his name was on the BC or not.

If they were not married then he will have very little chance of getting any rights unless she is willing to allow him to see his son or she or her new BF are treating him bad.

True that thai courts are very good towards Farangs ( i had to got to court to get legal full custody of my child).

Better he just talk with her and ask to see him.
