Alternative To Dhl Express? (safe, Prompt, secure)

I am needing to find a way to send a "semi" valuable item to Japan, from Phuket. DHL has recently raised their rates significantly, and I was wondering if there were alternative methods?? Is there UPS or Fedex or some other such Courier Service in Phuket, that has a way of tracking the package, and perhaps more importantly, insuring it (against loss/damage)??

Finally, is there a "high-end" International Post option offered by the Thai Post Office--that is dependable and trustworthy?

Speed is not as important (3-7 days) as security. The item is small and weighs less than 2 KG, so not much of an issue there either.

Would appreciate any suggestions, along with local Phuket Office locations if known.

Thanks!

I have used Thailand Post's "EMS" service before 1.5kg sent to UK cost me about 2000 baht, they supply a tracking number for online tracking over the web, not sure about insurance options though. you can do this at any post office.

There is another thread not too long ago (last week) about the location of the UPS office.

They moved about 6 months ago to a shophouse/storefront near Tesco Lotus.

I used them last week, very friendly and English speaking person there.

Also, the Thai Postal Service is pretty reliable. Over the years, i have only had one package damaged. (looked like it was run over by a truck) but they ALL made it to their destination.

I believe the Thai Post Office does offer insurance.

UPS might have a better tracking service. My last package got to the states in 4 days. (from UPS)

there are usually few companies in Thailand as UPS, FedEx, TNT

for small package up to 5 kg in my experience better to use EMS, which charges by weight.

FedEx promotion boxes are good for bigger weight like 10-25kg - price would be much cheaper then EMS.

but not for small weights - because it would charge as for 10kg(25kg), even if it is only 1-2kg total weight.

I've always used EMS and never had any problems they give you a tracking number which, although I've never used it, I believe you can check it online. I normally send through aa shop in Tesco Lotus, the only problem is the girls don't like you to put the value on the dispatch note (wonder why) So in the event of a claim I would be curious as to what wouls happen. I would never use DHL past have had experience with them and IMHO they are very expensive,
