Rajah Posted January 28, 2008 Posted January 28, 2008 Three die in Kalim horror smash KATHU: Two Italian tourists and a Thai teenager were killed in a head-on collision in Kalim on Thursday night, a local Thai-language newspaper has reported. The two Italians were named as Luiz Fransescopilato, 37, and his female companion Anna Montone, 30. The Thai victim was identified as 15-year-old Patong resident Theerawat Samarnmitr. Ms Montone was riding pillion on a blue Honda Click motorbike being driven toward Kamala by Mr Fransescopilato at the time of the accident, which happened on a hilly section of the road known locally as the Hin Tang curve, the report read. According to the report, Ms Montone was killed instantly when the motorbike she was on collided head on with a modified off-road pickup truck being driven towards Patong by 75-year-old Jumnong Doomruk. The pickup apparently crossed the center line following a previous collision with a green Honda Click motorbike being driven by the Thai youth. Rescue volunteers pulled the comatose Mr Fransescopilato from a roadside concrete drain and rushed him to Patong Hospital, where he died soon after arrival. K. Theerawat was taken to Vachira Phuket Hospital, where he died about 11:30 pm that night. Police called in K. Jumnong for questioning, but it was not reported whether he was charged with any moving violations. SOURCE: Phuket Gazette Does anyone have additional information about this terrible accident?
LivinginKata Posted January 28, 2008 Posted January 28, 2008 I picked on that story a couple of days ago. My reaction...a 75 year old guy driving a 'modified' pick-up (whatever that means) has a road incident with one m/bike, causing him to go onto the wrong side of the road, and wiping out another 2 people. And the police do not charge him ??? A Farang would be straight into the police cells pending bail for at least 200,000 baht. <deleted> ....

The "modified" refers to the pick-up being raised up high off the ground, like a mini "monster truck", if you know what I mean. There was a picture of it in Siang Tai of it.
LivinLOS Posted January 28, 2008 Posted January 28, 2008 Yes but those modifications make then top heavy and unstable.. Would be good reporting to confirm or clarify what (probably) many are wondering and thats if a breath test was performed.

Being such an elder (= highly respected) citizen, the Thai police would be too busy kissing his ass and worrying about his condition.
Super Hans Posted January 28, 2008 Posted January 28, 2008 It is equally likely that the 15 year old caused the accident through dangerous driving - some the recklessness of youngsters on motorbikes defies belief. Tragic all round.

Macx Posted January 29, 2008 Posted January 29, 2008 Condolences to the victims. That cursed bend. Three days before I was almost in a head-on collision with a drunken Thai teenager (at 8AM!) driving a Mio. His face was and neck was completely red and he lost control of his bike and went into my lane. My passenger asked me to pull over. While parked on the side of road, next to the ocean, we saw the same idiot go zooming up and down the same stretch of road as if he were in a drunken rage. Nothing we could do except that he crashes and injure himself only. Sad to say, the traffic condition here is appalling and most tourists simply don't realize it until it's too late.
