These look a bit washed out compared to the originals when converted for the web

What are they doing in the first one?

I would almost split it into two photos, top and bottom halves....

The texture in the sea of the second is surreal,

pity the horizon is tilted. (My pet hate).

They were recovering fish traps

Ahhh yes, well spotted. A rotate in PS needs to be on the cards :o

I like the second shot.

This reminds me of a similar shot by a famous professional photographer but I can't recall the name, either Robert Doisneau or Elliot Erwitt I think. Tilted horizon is also my pet hate (but could have been easily corrected). :o

Where is this beach btw? It doesn't quite look like Thailand.

No it doesnt does it? , just hard to put my finger on why. The sea surface perhaps?

Anyway, you are correct. West coast USA.

I can't quite explain why I thought it was, but I did think it was U.S. west coast, perhaps because I lived near the beach cities in the southern California (Orange County). It reminded me of Santa Monica, Huntington Beaach, New Port Beach, etc.
