Hello,

My friend is Thai and has a Thai passport.

She is working in Ireland at the moment.

Her Thai passport runs out in November 2008.

She wants to go back to Thailand for a two week holiday in August 2008.

I have the following questions:

1) Will she need 6 months before her passport expires in order to be allowed entry into Thailand?

For example, when she will go to Thailand on holiday in August, her passport will expire in just two months.

2) If she does need at least six months before her passport expires, to enter Thailand, where/how can you renew a foreign/Thai passport in Ireland?

3) If she is left into Thailand with a passport that will expire in just two months would she be able to go back to Ireland with the same passport after two weeks or would she need a new passport. Would it be possible to get a Thai passport in Thailand within a few days or would it be safer to have the passport setup probably before hand in Ireland?

Thank you

1. No:

Passport (must be in good condition) required. Also accepted:

- expired passport, provided holding a Thai Citizen ID card or

any Thai government ID; or

- Certificate of Identity.

Visa not required.

2. NA - London Embassy visit would be required for new type passport issue I believe.

3. Return only for period passport is valid:

Passport (valid for the period of intended stay) required.

Visa required.

Should not be a problem making new passport in two week period - believe normally takes about 3 days.

She can enter Thailand without question during the validity of the passport

She can get a new passport if she applies and collects in Bangkok in 3 days (about a week if it is done upcountry and posted to her home address)

She will need to carry both old and new passports when she travels as the old passport will contain her visa/permission to stay in Ireland. The old passport will be returned to her cancelled for travel but the visas therein remain valid until they expire.

If she holds the old type Thai passport (not the Biometric passport) they were valid for 5 years but have the option of being extended. They can be extended once only but due to the change over to Biometric passports they will only extend until July 2010. If she wishes she can extend it until that date by posting it to The Thai Embassy London prior to her travel allowing 3 weeks to complete.

Thank you very much for the information and extremely quick responses, lopburi3 and Mahout Angrit.

I'll tell her that information and keep this thread updated with how it goes.
