Can someone please tell me what's going on in Bedlam recently?

We've had cat fights, Seonai is no longer a mod and apparently about to leave the forum and now a poster with over 7,500 posts is banned! :D

What happens here after I go to bed each night? :o

Yes, many apples from this 'fine' tree. I think I need a blinking eyeball avatar. :o

Hopefully things will settle down sooner rather than later... odd how it seems to go in cycles.

If anyone's got any leftover bait, bin it.

Yeah i've just noticed Chownah is banned :D

<deleted>!! How can Chownah be banned!? Holiday first surely. :o

Last seen giving out some excellent advice in the farming forum and giving everyone a chuckle in Bedlam.

How can you ban a member like that?

Unfortunately, he did it to himself. He had more than the requisite number of warnings, and holidays, knew he was teetering on the edge and flamed away regardless. I did talk to him about it a while back, but I guess he felt it was worth it. :o

Your avatar aims a mean catapult, methinks.

No, no, no, not chow! One of my favourite posters, great fun, and 'weird' to boot! I'm shocked! :o

I voted "other." I think most trolls believe they are adding spice to Thai Visa...and sometimes they do. Most of the time they seem to take great delight in upsetting the regular TV posters. I know that a couple of trolls have earned invitations from me to meet them at the bar of their choice so that I could have the pleasure of kicking their asses. I'd like to add that these invitations were never accepted...which only proves the trolls were more mature than I was at the time.

Totally mistaken, LeungKen. Twasn't me. As I stated, admin makes these decisions.

As for the idea that trolls think they are adding spice, well, yes, I suspect that is the way they look at it. And a very few do. But most are just annoying, disruptive and generally obnoxious. Its a pity they don't have something more constructive to do with their lives.

Yes a good (as in amusing and inoffensive) troll can be entertaining, but the problem is that someone always suffers - often, but not exclusively, the naive/newby types. As we know all too well in this forum, some trolls can be quite sophisticated - we've even seen some mods take them at face value. The OP typically repeats the behaviour and with experience, the level of sophistication increases. Repetition though, is the key to determination of the purpose, yet trollers can often avoid infringement of the same rules that they are luring others into breaching. That's as far as I can take it without crossing the border myself. So, trolls can 'work' in terms of amusement value, but someone suffers and the reason for the post has nothing to do with good intentions. Personally, I despise them.

I am not sure where I have ever attacked an FNG on this Forum

I do not think that I have become more sophisticated, just an impulse to read peoples views on various subjects and in return, hopefully learn something new, read about differing ideologies and cultures and in all cases, new perspectives

So, trolls can 'work' in terms of amusement value, but someone suffers and the reason for the post has nothing to do with good intentions.

Am I under the mistaken apprehension that Bedlam is primarily about amusement and again I challenge you or anybody else to submit one of my responses, that has been specifically aimed at other peoples suffering, except in response.

Personally, I despise them.

Well, cheers then, to generate, 'despite', was beyond my aspirations, but fortunately, the feeling is not reciprocated.

I don't recall seeing your name on my post, Moss... What are you trying to say? :o

Moss, you do seem to have taken Ping's post personally.

Did you start on the Jameson a bit early?

Ping, there are far too many big words in a very condensed space.

I couldn't read your post.

The OP

The use of the term OP, generally means the Original Post or Poster, as I was the Original poster of this thread, it would seem reasonable to assume that Ping was using a rather blunt and dull method of Allegory, without actually using anyone's name.

Moss, you do seem to have taken Ping's post personally.

Nope, just responding, I have only ever taken one thing on this forum personally and I dealt with that at the time.

Did you start on the Jameson a bit early?

'Fraid not, celebrated at the Rugby Festival yesterday, recovering today.

Ping it's alright mate. Get another round in. I'll clarify.

Gotta keep these Oxford chaps in check.

Pings post was describing, in his point of view, Trolls - Not Moss.

Hence he was describing a typical thread started by a typical troll- not Moss -, and then went on to say,

The OP typically repeats the behaviour and with experience, the level of sophistication increases.
- Where The OP is the exemplified troll - Not Moss.

Kayo,

Pour yourself another drink,

When I need clarification of a post, or a posting style, or a history of a posting style......................

Moss

I was educating myself on the term "troll" today online.

One interesting distinction was between "troll" and "flamebait", according to wikipedia. Actually I think the people I tend to dislike are more the "flamebaiters", I mean who insult other people.

Another thing I learned about was "Godwin's Law". Well I found it interesting and amusing I guess, I bet the mods have heard some accusations like this!

Godwin's law

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Godwin's Law (also known as Godwin's Rule of Nazi Analogies)[1] is an adage formulated by Mike Godwin in 1990. The law states:[2][3]

"As a Usenet discussion grows longer, the probability of a comparison involving Nazis or Hitler approaches one."

Godwin's Law is often cited in online discussions as a caution against the use of inflammatory rhetoric or exaggerated comparisons, and is often conflated with fallacious arguments of the reductio ad Hitlerum form.

The rule does not make any statement whether any particular reference or comparison to Hitler or the Nazis might be appropriate, but only asserts that one arising is increasingly probable. It is precisely because such a comparison or reference may sometimes be appropriate, Godwin has argued[4] that overuse of Nazi and Hitler comparisons should be avoided, because it robs the valid comparisons of their impact. Although in one of its early forms Godwin's Law referred specifically to Usenet newsgroup discussions,[5] the law is now applied to any threaded online discussion: electronic mailing lists, message boards, chat rooms, and more recently blog comment threads and wiki talk pages.

History

Godwin has stated that he introduced Godwin's Law in 1990 as an experiment in memetics.[3]

Linking by implication the fallacy of reductio ad Hitlerum to online discussion length had been done prior to 1990 by a poster named Richard Sexton in 1989: "You can tell when a USENET discussion is getting old when one of the participents[sic] drags out Hitler and the Nazis."[6] Godwin's Law does not, however, claim to articulate a fallacy; it is instead framed as a memetic tool to reduce the incidence of inappropriate hyperbolic comparisons. It has not been established whether Sexton's quip had any influence on Godwin's law, though Sexton has stated that Godwin has acknowledged that he borrowed the idea from Sexton and named it.[7]

Corollaries and usage

There are many corollaries to Godwin's law, some considered more canonical (by being adopted by Godwin himself)[2] than others invented later.[1] For example, there is a tradition in many newsgroups and other Internet discussion forums that once such a comparison is made, the thread is finished and whoever mentioned the Nazis has automatically "lost" whatever debate was in progress. This principle is itself frequently referred to as Godwin's Law. It is considered poor form to raise such a comparison arbitrarily with the motive of ending the thread. There is a widely recognized codicil that any such ulterior-motive invocation of Godwin's law will be unsuccessful (this is sometimes referred to as "Quirk's Exception").[8]

Godwin's Law applies especially to inappropriate, inordinate, or hyperbolic comparisons of other situations (or one's opponent) with Hitler or Nazis or their actions. It does not apply to discussions directly addressing genocide, propaganda, or other mainstays of the Nazi regime.[citation needed] Whether it applies to humorous use or references to oneself is open to interpretation, because although mentioning and trivializing Nazism in an online discussion, this would not be a fallacious attack against a debate opponent.

However, Godwin's Law itself can be abused, as a distraction or diversion, that fallaciously miscasts an opponent's argument as hyperbole, especially if the comparisons made by the argument are actually appropriate. A 2005 Reason magazine article argued that Godwin's Law is often misused to ridicule even valid comparisons.[9]

Wow, I have never heard of Godwin's Law. I recognise it though. Sometimes you're reading a thread and maybe even contributing, leave it for a few days and it somehow became a 'Nazi' thread with all sorts of unfair comparisos and accusations being made. Interesting that we have a name for it!

Thanks KO (Re post 107) - spot on... :o

*** Hmmm... wonder what happened to that tempting bit of bait? ***

I liked the Godwin's rule bit from the Doc. It is often used as a last, desperate retort by people who are unable or unwilling to provide a response to the substantive issue that the poster in question has raised (even where it may only be a 'flame'). I prefer the soup Nazi.

Well one of you is right and it isn't to thank Kayo for totally putting his own spin on my response, however I would be pleased to buy either one of you a pint, I have a strong feeling that I would enjoy the company.

As Robbo says, it is better to be flamed face to face that through cyber-unreality. :D

Good Luck

Moss

I'm consistently impressed with your posts Moss - generally few words, but often cleverly constructed in terms of the messages. I'm sure that if we had a drink together, it would be interesting, to say the least. :o

May I join in this drink too, as I'd like to meet all of you.
