Get a Visa at the bridge . About 1,500 Baht . Take a photo with you.

As for taking the car across , you need insurance and a car pass. Not an expert but others will advise.

Just before the Thai immigration post turn of to the right and behind the shops there is car parking.You can catch a shuttle bus that takes you over to the Laos side .You alight opposite the window for visas!Should take you half an hour at most,unless you want to sightsee in Vientiene!Then just take the shuttle bus back over.There is a duty free shop on the Laos side,dont know if its any cheaper than Thailand?

It is not possible to take a hire car (hired in Thailand) out of Thailand.

Every car leaving the country has to have a Passport Rot i.e car passport and to get one you need to prove ownership which you clearly cannot do with a hire car.

Sorry to pee on your fireworks but I have learnt the hard way. Also the car passport office is closed weekends!
