Hi there,

Has anyone ever homeschooled/online schooling for their child from BC in Thailand? We would like to keep his schooling from the BC curriculum in Canada.

We are doing a big move from Canada to Thailand...Chiang Mai in September of this year. We will obtain a 1 year visa and during that time enjoy life and look into business prospects to buy so we can stay in Thailand. We do not want our son to go to an Internaional School or Thai School...just online....anyone out there that has already done this or is doing this.....and can give me some pointers?

Greatly appreciated!

A Canadian friend of mine homeschooled her kids a few years ago. Well, now that I think about it, it was about 8 years ago :o

Anyway, her main problem was the fact that her kids are both Thai nationals and at least back then, attending school is mandatory. So, her kids attended Thai school during the day, then had to come home, do their Thai homework and then do their Canadian homework. In the end, they decided it was too much work for the girls and moved back to Canada when the girls hit 11. She felt their English wasn't quite up to par (they had grown up in Thailand--and I thought spoke english fluently but she said it was noticeable when with other Canadian kids). Also, the extracurricular activities where I live are nil outside of girl scouts and school sports. She was happy enough with the home schooling program but felt that it wasn't enough for a well-rounded education.

There are lots of homeschoolers here in Thailand, although I don't personally know of any Canadians. Allison Coley (089-782-3478 [email protected]) is the current coordinator for the "Bangkok Area Homeschool Network." The following information is from the BAMBI website at www.bambiweb.org.

"Bangkok Area Homeschool Network

A support network for home schooling families. Designed to provide parents with a network to discuss teaching methods, curriculums and available resources, and to give home schooled children regular contact with others, including field trips, play times and group classes / educational activities. For more information please contact Allison Coley on 089-782-3478 [email protected]"

If you get in touch with them, I'm sure they'll be able to give you more speciics about your situation.

Good luck!
