I notice on CS Loxinfo's website they have a promotion on till the end of October offering upcountry DSL for 990B/month 'Basic' or 1500/month for 'Advanced'. The speeds listed for each are the same (256/128), and so are the usage (unlimited) and mail space (100M), so I can't see what the difference is. Doesn't seem to be explained elsewhere on the site either.

Another difference is that if you have a TOT line upcountry you can buy the Basic service but if you have a TT&T line only the Advanced service is availalbe. I have a TT&T line, so was thinking in the long run it might be cheaper to switch to a TOT line. But first I need to get a grasp on the Basic vs Advanced service.

Just wondering if anyone else has done the research and knows the answer. If not, I'll call CSLoxinfo to see if they can explain it.

Difference between basic and advanced is the contention ratio. This means how much people they put on a certain amount of available bandwidth.

In real life this means that the basic package will be prone to fairly substantial slowdowns during peak hours. The advanced package will be shared by less subscribers so it'll slow down less.

The dsl-pro package is not shared, they also call this a dedicated connection, hence the high prices.

This is important for you if you will do a lot of downloading. Big downloads will only come in at the advertised speeds between 2:00 and 06:00!

Also streaming high quality audio/video will come in choppy during high traffic hours.

This is however less important surfing the web, where the slowdown will be hardly noticable.

Thanks, monty, that's what I needed to know. Funny it's not explained on the website, leaving viewers with no incentive to buy anything but basic.

bmw, the prices quoted in CSL's email to you refer only to Bangkok service. Upcountry the lowest priced packaged is 990B. Upcountry the Pro packaged is 4500B

Here's the link to the full price list for all levels, and for both BKK and upcountry (UPC):

TRUE Cable Modem

512/256 speed. 2000 baht installation fee. Monthly fee 1100 baht including VAT.

This is available in Chiang Mai and it is what I have used for over a month now. Works well. The advertised speed it reaches fairly rarely, but I like the fact that it has nothing to do with the substandard phone system in Thailand, but relies on a separate cable right into my room. You can get a notch higher speed too, 1024/512, which will probably help for domestic sites but hardly mean double speed for international connections which I assume is what you are after.

TRUE has their CM office in the little commercial soi to the left before Kaat Chang Phueak coming from Kaat Suan Kaew and Com Plaza (could hardly come from any other way since it's one way...).
