CHIANG RAI: -- Mae Fah Luang University students oppose the idea of separate toilets for transsexuals and want the money spent on facilities for others.

The Education Ministry wants separate restrooms for transsexuals to avoid potential problems.

But the university's students worry the facilities will be "isolated and disgusting". They add the move is unfair because its ignores homosexuals.

Transsexual nursing student Worakarn Kantajaem, 19, says he and 200 other transsexuals participate in university activities and believes their presence does not "disgust teachers or other students".

"Separate toilets won't make anything better for us. We can use both the men's and women's. It's unnecessary to build them," Worakarn says.

Narin In-anong, a Chinese-language student, suspects the ministry proposal will upset homosexuals.

Donnarid Meksri, a science student, does not agree because it will "separate transsexuals". Students want to see the money spent on more productive projects.

University Presidents' Council president and Naresuan University rector, Monthon Sa-nguansoemsi says the council will discuss the issue at its meeting next Saturday.

"I'll seek opinions, but we are also discussing student suicides, drugs, initiation ceremonies and uniforms," he says.

"At Naresuan University there are around 200 transsexuals among 35,000 students. They can use toilets for either sex. There's no problem," Monthon says.

Definitely a situation calling for intervention from Mr. Happy Toilet. He'll fix the problem and can demonstrate there's no need for ANY private toilet stalls.

Local high-ranked school directors love to build new physical facilities, even toilets. Then they often neglect more important things like maintenance, classroom supplies, desks, whiteboards, markers, salaries, real academic standards, etc. I visited a local govt. school last week and noticed the usual pitiful condition of the classrooms, no supplies, senseless top-down decisions, poor administration, etc.

The so-called homosexuals in the news release, who are probably gay Thais who do not cross-dress, probably outnumber the cross-dressers. One of my favorite gay Thai 19 year olds, 180 cm tall, said he uses the men's toilets and could beat up any straight student who objected! In fact, while transvestites and transsexuals need a specific category, gay Thais are not really the Third Sex, as Thai culture sometimes calls it.

When the law maker/social reformers of the world run out of work they come up with some real dandies. Maybe we need male, female, lesbian, homosexuals, transexuals and other, crappers just so no one feels slighted, or go back a few years where the (better joints?) had a single loo for everyone to use.

PB: You sure got it correct. I've seen so much construction, building, pulling up plants and replanting, only to change it all back to the way it was, but still the library can't get a new book--and our other one has already been colored in!

I know it may come as a surprise for some of you elderly males, but a great many women do not like the idea of using a public washroom with someone that still has a weenie. What's amazing about this, is that here the admin gets slammed for trying to be sensitive and accomodate the needs of "transgenders" while at the same time respecting the needs of women. In case you never noticed, there is usually a line up at the girls bathrooms because there are fewer places to pee than there are in a guy's washroom.

Remember, girls have to squat or sit to pee. The folks that design and build women's rest facilities do not take that anatomical fact into account when they build the relief areas. The typical woman's washroom usually has a similiar number of toilet stalls as a man's facility. The difference is that there will also be urinals in the guy's area, so unless someone has to take a dump, the peeing process goes faster for guys.

If you don't believe me, ask a girl.

It may also come as a surprise to some of you, but not all transgenders are very ladylike. They do not lift the toilet seat when they take a whizz. Women don't like to deal with that.

Hmmmmmm.............been there seen it - the 100 million baht new library with the half dozen books from the old one room library inside. Or the one million baht crapper with no soap or paper inside. Nationwide, this assymmetry between construction costs and O&M costs musts be staggering, and will be part of a creeping crisis that will hurt Thailand bad in years to come.
