DUTCHMAN‘S SIXTH ATTEMPT TO COMMIT SUICIDE SADLY SUCCESSFUL

Pattaya Police Investigator, Pol.Lt.Col. Tanagrit Labittisan, was informed at 4.30 pm, yesterday, 29 June 2008, that a foreigner had committed suicide in a room of Sodsai Apartment, 65/27 Soi Chalermprakiat 23 , Pattaya 3rd Road. Police and Sawang Boriboon accordingly rushed to the scene to investigate.

Sodsai Apartment is located next to Xyte, the famous discotheque. In the room, police found the body of the deceased man, Mr.Cornelis Faber (61), a Dutchman, lying on his back on the floor in the bathroom with a pillow under his head. He was wearing green shorts with no shirt. There was a plastic bag lying on the floor and a 15 kg. gas tank and a gas tube with the top cut off next to the body, which the police kept as evidence. There were no signs of foul play. Officials believe that he had been dead for about three hours.

Mrs. Boonyang Faber, Mr. Cornelis's wife and Ms. Wilai Horsilp(21), her daughter, tearfully told the police that Mr. Cornelis and she had been married and had been living in Pattaya for the last 17 years. Mr. Cornelis had worked as an architect for a big company in his country previously before he resigned and moved to Thailand. Mrs. Boonyang told police that Mr. Cornelis had attempted to commit suicide about five times before, but each time was discovered in time and survived. She said her husband had been struggling with his financial situation for the last couple of years.

Mrs. Boonyang said she had quit her job to stay with him and had found that recently he was apparently becoming less depressed. However, yesterday, she went downstairs to buy drinking water but happened to meet her friend and started a lengthy chat that lasted for hours. When she went back to the room, she found his body lying in the bathroom with a black plastic bag covering his head and a gas tube stuck in the bag. Mrs. Boonyang then closed the gas bottle and pulled the plastic bag from his head, but sadly Mr. Cornelis had already died.

Police believe that Mr. Cornelis was depressed over his financial state. Officials will send his body to the hospital for examination and inform the Dutch embassy accordingly.
