BAHT BUS DRIVER HANDS IN OMANI‘S WALLET

A faithful taxi driver brought back a wallet of an Omani passenger to Pattaya police. The content in the wallet was worth 500,000 Baht.

While Pol.Maj. Kriengkraiwut Bua-gla, Pattaya police officer, was working in the station on August 11th, 2008, at around 8.30pm, there were Mr. Hahim Essa (50), from Oman, and his other two Omani friends, came into the station alarmingly. Mr. Essa told police that he forgot his waist belt wallet with the contents of Air flight tickets, Passports, US Dollars and Thai baht, total amount worth around 500,000 Baht in a blue and yellow Toyota taxi, license 17, Chonburi.

They hired the taxi from Soi 7, Pattaya beach road, Moo 9, Nongprue, Banglamung, Chonburi, to go to Beverly Plaza, Thapraya road, and left the wallet on the back seat.

During the questioning, Mr. Jakarin Chamdet (52), from Nakornsawan province, the taxi driver, brought a black waist belt wallet of Mr. Essa to police station. The bag contended 14,000 US Dallar, 8,000 Thai Baht, 3 Air flight tickets and 3 Passports. Mr. Essa was delighted and confirmed that everything was still in his bag and he rewarded Mr. Jakarin, the faithful taxi driver, with 2,000 Baht.

Mr. Jakarin explained that after he had taken Mr. Essa and his friends to the hotel, he then went around the entertainment area in Pattaya for more passengers. A passenger who had hired him to go to North Pattaya found the wallet on the back seat.

He was shocked to see a lot of money, both in Thai Baht and US Dollar in the wallet, he then brought it to the police station. Fortunately, Mr. Essa, the owner of the wallet, was there at the same time.

Reward of only 2000 baht?? Should have been 5,000 or 10,000 as the minimum.

He's also lucky the passenger turned it into the driver. Mr Essa is a very lucky man.

Thailand has a ritual.

When taxi drivers are getting a lot of bad press, a story of a good samaritan taxi driver handing in a large amount of money apparently left in a taxi pops up in the newspaper. I note that Pattaya taxi drivers have been getting a bad name in the postbag of some Pattaya periodicals recently.

There is a slim, only very slim, chance of this story being true. If so, 2000 Baht is a miserly reward.

edit:

I've just seen this was a Baht bus driver not a "meter non-meter" taxi. These guys get a permanent bad press.
