well it looks like a new scam in town with the music licsence that is going around Kata, Rawai and now i am told some parts of Chalong.

2 cops and some Thai girl going round the bars saying they are from RJK Records with a fake id and fake cards looking at the CD,s and say you pay 5,000THB for this licsence or they will give you a 50,000THB fine.

Mind you for 5,000THB you get a nice looking licsence just like the ones in the windows or your car very nice oooooo and no goverment stamp are and her email is an HOTMAIL address and not a .com and the bars are still buying them.

i have just come up with a good one you need a licsence to fart it will cost you 5 grand

For the umpteenth time (does no one read before posting)..

Theres nothing scam about it.. Its a music license.. 200 baht per chair (approx) and venues have needed one for years. Its not new, its not changed, its just being enforced.

Well the proper licensing authorities can be found online.. Buy your license from them and you wont get a problem.

Theres actually 2 licenses, one that handles western music, and another that handles most, but not all (!!!), Thai labels.. So make sure your Thai staff dont leave some CD's around or you could be liable for the full fines based on one odd Thai CD.

As to this myserious 'Phuket town license office' what place is this ?? I certainly have not heard of any representative of the western labels having a base in Phuket town.

Also if you read the forum you will see this has been happening throughout Patong, Kamala, Karon, Kata in the last weeks.. Again, its not new, I knew bars that legally had thier licenses 4 or 5 years ago and have renewed them annually. Just because they let the rural backwater places slide for a few years doent make it the real law. You dont need to wear a helmet in Rawai much either but it doesnt mean its legal to ride without one.

I know we have already agreed to disagree on this subject, but! The people currently hitting up the island over copied music have no legal basis for the fines they are dishing out. Whether you have a license or not they are hitting bars hard with huge fines. Ranging from 50K to 105K here in Kamala. They do however have the co-operation of the local BiB. Kamala's Orbortor had a meeting yesterday where he discussed how he was seriously un-impressed, how they were effectively illegal and how another company was suspected to be swooping in next month. He has given a number to all the bars present and told them to pay nothing, police or not, and phone him to come and see them off.

Well police and license inspection people came to a Patong bar.. Saw the license, had a bit of a snoop to see if there were any obvious copied CD's.. Were shown the laptop that has the CD collection archived in MP3 for the bar IPOD, were offered to see the physical CD's (they then had lost interest as all was in order) and left without any fine.

Dont know how else to say it.. They had a license and paid no fine..

Same in Phuket Town. No clear guidelines and many bars have been fined despite having licenses. Patong seems to have avoided this set of fines, so far. Support of the BiB here too, despite no affiliation.
