Tattoo For Sale

Featured Replies

Some of you may know I like tattoo - I have one of my own :o

I thought this was very interesting but despite what the article claims there has been long line of tattoos sold legally in Asia. I have been to the Tatttoo museum in Japan which has a large collection of skins dating back several hundred years. The museum has private benefactors and collectors who arrange the sale and collection of the skin after the death of the owner. The money is paid according to the artist's skill and reputation plus the style and individuality of design.

A Swiss man has sold an elaborate Virgin Mary tattoo on his back to a German collector, with the understanding it can be exhibited three times yearly, a Zurich gallery says.

The extraordinary transaction — which gallery owner Jutta Nexdorf claims is the first of its kind — fetched 150,000 euros (A$257,000), with the other main stipulation being that the 35-hour work can be removed from the bearer's skin upon death and handed to its owner.

The owner will also be allowed to sell the tattoo, created by Belgian artist Wim Delvoye and notable for depicting the mother of Jesus with a lifeless skull.

Proceeds from the sale are being shared among the gallery, tattoo bearer Tim Steiner and Delvoye, Nexdorf told AFP.

The tattoo will go on show for the first time next week in Singapore and Shanghai.

Conceptual artist Delvoye is famous for his unconventional work, including the tattooing of live pigs.

He chose to feature a number of inked pigs, which are tattooed under anesthesia, in a 2005 Chinese display due to the country's relaxed animal welfare laws.

So the tatooee gets three international holidays a year on top of his cut from the sale?

Nice work if you can get it.

I'm glad you told me the bottom pic was of piggies, the top one looks like Sonny Barger.

I'm not sure I'd describe China's animal welfare laws as "relaxed".

Seeing as how the tattooed guy is dead the only cut he gets form the sale is when they skin him. Interesting point is that in my limited experience with art galleries is that that normally they skin you alive - at least this time they wait until you have died before dividing up the spoils.

Btw the gallery in Japan had a very interesting - albeit graphic exhibition on how they remove the skins of "donors" It went from the beginning of removing from the cadaver to cleaning, tanning, stretching, and preparing for exhibit.

I am not sure if Barger of Hells Angels fame is still alive. He was very sick with cancer when last I was in Australia.

Relaxed to the point of comatose
