So Wtf Do They Call It A Foreign Exchange?

Featured Replies

Been to 7 different areas in PT, including Centran, Tedco and Big C. All said that they cannot sell me sterling pounds.

At the last one I asked why are they called a forex for? Oh, we sell you Thai baht, sah.

I give up.

Did they tell you why they cannot sell you Pounds, was it a case of them not having any or is it policy that they don't sell them? If you go to any of the larger branches you will certainly be able to buy currency and don't really understand why you couldn't.

they exchange foreign currency to bahts...

The titles says that..

srsly, why would they offer sterling pound in a country that residents cannot travel to other countries unless they go through a very hard process to get a visa?

Try the "Airport"...but you will need your passport and a ticket showing you are LEAVING! Or you need to go to the big bank in Bangkok.

It's a "one way" deal. Makes sense too when you think about it. Your in LOS!

The "why" is because the branches receive Pounds from tourists/customers and they then need to sell them on to other customers in order to make a profit, that's how banks work! I live in Phuket and have bought Pounds Sterling here twice in the past year, it's not an unusual act and it's not difficult to do as long as you go to one of the larger branches during the normal working week of Monday to Friday. In fact, you can even order the currency and if the branch doesn't have enough in stock they will arrange to collect it from other branches and call you when they do have it.

The airport departures level is the only place I know where you can buy foreign currency with baht. Last time I bought S$ they did not ask to see passport or ticket.

You will need your passport although there is no requirement to have an outbound ticket, if they have the currency they will sell it to you, same rules at Phuket banks and Chiang Mai banks and Bangkok banks apply.

Over the years I've tried to get foreign currency at my Patong branch and it was obvious they were not interested in me buying pounds, just gave me the run around. I guess you are referring to Phuket Town main bank. It's easier at the airport, and they seem to have plenty of currency available on the spot.

Well, tourists sell sterling to them. This is another obvious shoot in the foot way of doing things in LOS. They could make more money by reselling them back. I mean, it is called a foreign exchange.

The last one told me to buy them at the airport. Never thought of pre ordering it. Good idea!

You know, even the tiny Tomas Cook branch in buttfcku Eastbourne has Thai baht. Why would they want to sell Thai baht to someone in Eastbourne? Gimme a break! To make money, of course.

Tons of tourists selling them all day at Centran and Tedco. Stock they had, samong mai mee!

Go to the Phuket Town branch of Bangkok Bank.

Always the best rates, always the foreign currency on hand as that is the central location where the foreign currencies go from places like their local exchanges.
