Can anybody tell me if there is such a thing as a D-Max Hi-Lander 4x4 ?

I went to the Isusu garage today to ask about a new Hi-Lander and she gave me the price of 732.000. looking at the paper it says Cab 4 Hi-Lander 2.5 ABS 4wd.

I thought the whole idea of the Hi-Lander was that it was high up like the 4x4 but was infact only 2wd. what's going on here ?

I believe you are right.

D Max 3.0L = 4x4

Hi-Lander 2.5 & 3.0L = 2x4

No such thing as a D Max Hi-Lander

Dave( D Max owner)

I own a 3 year old 3.0L D-Max Cab 4 Hi Lander and it is a 2x4 drive

Hi-landers are not 4 wheel drive. 4 wheel dmaxs are the Rodeo lines and the cab 4 LS

All Isuzu pickups are call Dmaxs because the engines are Dmax.

So you have 5 main models.

spark, low end, no cab

space cab, can fit small kids or subwoofer behind the seat.

hi lander, higher height

rodeo, 4 wheel drive

cab 4, 4 doors the LS is a 4 wheel drive model.

Engines are called "vgtec" though, right? I understand that some models still come with previous engine variants "idpi" or something.

Ok thanks for clearing that up, the actual paperwork with the prices has been printed incorrect as it clearly states Hi-Lander 4x4 ?

I am now looking at a 3.0L 4x4 for 873.000 baht or the 3.0L 4x2 Hi-Lander special at 847.000 baht ?

That seems about right.

I bought a 4x4 Rodeo LS 4 door 3.0L a couple years ago was 845,000.

but had to add 20,000 for the a/c. So I said I didn't want the a/c and the sales lady said no cannot the car comes with a/c but the price list doesn't.

What do you now think of your D max ? one thing I can't find out is, is there an electric seat option like there is in the Triton ? not that it's a big concern but nice if possible. :o

For me the Triton was never an option. Tthe DMax was not that luxurious. It was either going to be a Vigo or DMax.

My company bought both. These are 4 x 4 4 door AT versions. I don't hink Mitsu offered a an AT 4 x 4 4 door.

VIGO 4 x 4 4 door AT-

Pros:

-The power and acceleration is superb. The power on demand is almost like a compact car.

-The interior is more spacious, was more luxurious, and the car was definately higher must be because of the bigger tires.

- Doesn't drive or sound like a pickup.

Cons:

- The car was just too big and clumsy, Couldn't really see anything while driving. Could see the nose or behind. Really a pain to park.

- The car didn't have very good traction. It didn't feel safe. Like it was going to slide off the road and roll over. It felt like it was dancing. Must be because of the higher ride height and loose suspension. Even though it uses coil springs in the front The suspension just didn't feel good. It was eiher too bumpy or too much suspension travel roll wise left/right. Lots of people with Fortuners also complained about the the suspension until they redesigned it. Not sure how it rides now.

- The car eats more gas than the DMax.

- Even though it feels like it has more power while city driving and acceleration when going uphill the car lost alot power especially with heavy loads or up those u-turn bridges in BKK.

- Brake performance was terrible must be because of the bigger tires.

- My model didn't have Xenon head lights.

- Service cost more, car cost more, and had a much longer wating period. Not much options.

- Couldn't change the 4 x 4 on the fly. I though it was a pain to change to 4 x 4 so I never did.

- 4 x 4 performance was lacking. I think it was Toyota's AT. Must have been a Camry like transmission because 4 x 2 was great but 4 x 4 sucked.

- Traction was terrible. I think dangerous. I've seen many VIGOS roll over on the roads.

Dmax 4 x 4 rodeo LS:

Pros:

- Much better mileage compared to the VIGO.

- The suspension felt much better.

- The quality of the car is much better. The welds, workmanship. The VIGO was just sloppy and felt like the entire inside was kept together with plastic snaps.

- The car was much easier to drive. The size was much better, could see better and park easier.

- No matter empty or fully loaded the engine never lost power and felt the same up or downhill.

- Really good deal. I got free leather seats and free service. Would you believe my last oil change cost me something like 7 baht for a washer? Also free liner, etc.

- Love the Xenon lights.

- I think the car looks much better and more practical.

- No coil springs in the front but torsion bars.

- Parts are much cheaper.

- 4 x 4 on the fly yeah! One button push must be under 80Kmh though. 4High,4Low,2High(normal)

- Much better 4 x 4 performance.

- Car feels stronger and safer.

Cons:

- It was severely handicapped in terms of interior luxury. The interior looked like a pickup interior.

- It doesn't have as much acceleration as the VIGO

- Sound system was crap.

- I think the DMax's engine was noisier.

Overall:

In the end we sold the VIGO and both my father and I always argued who would be driving the DMax while the loser would drive the VIGO. Whoever drove the car first would always take the DMax. The DMax just drives better. It feels better and is much more practical. The mileage was better, suspension off road wise was better (my father likes to go to Kanchanaburi treks) Stat wise the VIGO is bigger and more power but... One stat one cannot put on paper or review is we liked the DMax better. Don't know why, we just did. It felt better to drive, I think it looks better.

My friend who also drives a VIGO while sitting in our DMax one day said "Wow it feels better and the ride suspension is really good"

In the end DMax changed their engine (GOLD) and interior while VIGO changed their suspension so I don't know what its like now.

If I had to buy again I would still pick the DMax. But the 4 x 2 or space cab or 2.5 models I would consider the VIGO. Still I don't think one would be better off or worse if picking either.

Why we bought the DMax? We wanted the Fortuner in the 1st place.

1) Way better sales service and options from Isuzu. The Fortuner at the time had a 6 month wating period and no discount so we said screw that.

2) My friend who is a Toyota mechanic told me not to buy the Fortuner or VIGO because it was unsafe do to rollovers.

3) My friend to sell plastic parts to the Toyota plant in the East of BKK told me at the time the VIGO, Fortuner line had teething problems and the line would always stop production do to some problem everyday.

We had to buy 2 cars because we each need a pickup or 4 wheel vehicle. Eventually we sold the VIGO and my dad bought the new model CRV.

Thank's mdechgan for giving your experiances.

One point Im not sure of is..... "If I had to buy again I would still pick the DMax. But the 4 x 2 or space cab or 2.5 models" why not another 4x4 ?

It means I would still buy the Dmax for the 4x4 but for other models I would like to try the Vigo because they would drive better in BKK traffic as the Vigos drive more like a regular car not a pickup truck.

I've a D-Max Highlander 3.0L auto and hired a Vigo 4*2 auto for a month. The new Isuzu engline has more power than mine but it is ok. There is probably not much in it nowadays. The Toyota auto box is better than the Isuzu for sure but it is acceptable. The Toyota is bigger but much more difficult to live with if tight parking / driving situations. Glad we bought the D-MAx especially with the missus driving.

My thoughts exactly. The Dmax is just more practical and easier to drive for some reason. Even though the Dmax lacks power in the older models the VIGO was just a pain to drive. The VIGO just didn't feel right. I am also glad we bought the DMax instead of keeping the VIGO. The 4 x 2 had the same problems as the VIGO 4 x 4 just too big and clumsy?

Actully drove a Vigo again today when out and about and after this discussion I paid particular attention to things like body roll and visability and the D-Max is streets ahead though I do like the auto box on the Vigo. Need to drive the new VGS engine in the D-Max to compare. When we got ours, it was only available on the 4*4 which we didn't need.
