I recently went to purchase a motorcycle or runabout from Honda Dealer but was informed that apart from the normal Goverment insurance the only other additional cover (Insurance) i could purchase was only to cover me and other parties for personal injury, and if the motorcycle was stolen the company would pay i think 80% of the new value back in the first year and less in the subsequent year, i said ok but what if the motorcycle was damaged in a collision, i was informed that the insurance did not cover this, so i asked if i could get insurance to cover damage to the motorcycle but was told one can not get this in Thailand (Insurance to cover motorcycle damage repair costs)

So my question/s is can one get insurance ( In Thailand) to cover in the cost of getting a motorcycle that has been involved in an accident, repaired ?.

Also what happens if an accident is caused by a second party and it is their fault and your motorcycle is damaged? does their (assuming they have some) insurance not pay for any repairs.

I realise personal injury insurance is a priority here and it is comforting to know medical bills will be covered but at the same time i dont want to be lying in a hospital worrying about repair bills

You can buy insurance to cover the damages to your property as well, the problem is when I looked at it for my car the rates were as high as New York City actually higher than what I was paying in the USA, not that I can blame them but heck it's cheaper to fix the car by myself and the same goes for the motorcycle insurance it's cheaper to buy a new motorcycle.

It is very difficult to obtain 1st Class Comprehensive coverage for motorbikes in Thailand. For small bikes under 250 cc it is almost impossible. Self-insuring against bike damage might be a better option. Expanded 3rd Party liability coverage is a much more important need for you.

One insurer, though, will sell 1st Class Comprehensive to you if you purchase other insurance (homeowners, renters, etc.) along with the bike insurance. Thaivisa can get it for you.

The bike insurance you can purchase in Thailand is intended to cover medical care for the injured 3rd party, not for you. If you want to cover your medical bills you should have your own personal health insurance. Think about liability protection when you buy bike insurance. The non-compulsory plans also provide bail bond protection.

If the other party is at fault, they have to pay for damage to you and your bike, whether they have insurance or not. Call your insurance company to deal with them, and notify the police.

When i bought the bike Honda click ,Honda quoted me 2100 Bht for Personal accidet cover which also covered paying for a third party and covered the bike if it was stolen.

So suppose to get a bike insured that covers accident damage to the bike is an extra 6068 Baht, on top of the insurance that Honda quoted [2100 Baht] seems a little high.

I also got a quote for a Toyota Vios from them that seemed a little high compared with the originl Toyota policy i had when i first got the car

May be you only get what you pay for but it would be interesting to see what other comments other TV Members have who have taken out insurance with this Ins company have to say pos or neg?

Well, in my most recent experience..

Wrapped my Vespa around something harder than me..crushed the right front side of the scoot and tore up the engine cowling.

I had bought 1st class insurance which covers damages to my little beauty.

6kbt.

Put the Vespa in the shop and told 'em to make it as good as new ( heck, my baby is over 30 yrs old ) and was expecting to pay mucho. ( That's including the deductable w/ insurance )

Complete repair with new paint job cost only 3k.

Heck with the insurance, as we found out when we called and figured it was going to be a complete hassle..

Remember this is on a vintage classic Vespa.

I'm sure that the same damage to a Honda dream would have sent it to the boneyard.

I think why waste the money paying for damage insurance when it's cheap enough to repair out a pocket.

My thought.

To The Member above

Yes thinking about it you are probabaly correct, i could get a lot of parts for 8000 Bhts worth of insurance most of the people who i know have had accidents have to replace things like mirrors and panels and lights.

But i will keep looking at insurance and any more thoughts and experiences on this subject will be of interest.

Also Thank you to VocalNiel for sending me the link i will take a look later

Each time that I bought a new Honda CBR150, the purchase price of over 62,000 included the first year's insurance. mcgriffith said for about 3K or 6Kextra, he got coverage that included his own damages to his CBR150, for 2 or 3 years. I crashed my second bike shortly after buying it, and we got reimbursed 100% of MY medical bills paid for in the first week, and 50% of my medical bills in the following two weeks.

///Added - we never paid 1,000 baht each time we renewed our liability coverage.
