But he;s got soul...

Sam Cooke's "A change is gonna come" is one of the most beautiful in the world

Aretha Franklin, singin "do Right Woman, Do Right Man" is lovely...

Thaddy, checking up my media library, (i'm compiling a play list according to this RS list) I'm gonna guess that's the full name of the Toots, from Toots & the Maytals - I've got a track Monkey Man from their "Pressure Drop - Best of" album

Forgot how good Mystery Train is. Haven't listened to it for years.

If the omitted word was 'songs' I agree completely.

Up until the movie 'The Blues Brothers' (long time ago) I was locked into rock full time, old-rock, pop-rock, prog-rock, punk-rock, blackpool-rock. That movie didn't change my life, but it did open up musical avenues that I hadn't explored before, musical avenues that I had never walked down because I had already decided, incorrectly, that I didn't like them.

I discovered Ray Charles, John Lee Hooker, James Brown and, of course, Aretha......

I remember the moment, sitting in a cinema, practically empty, enjoying the movie (Animal House was good, so I went) and then this scene came on.....

Not a very good clip, sorry about that, but I had one of those Rev. Cleophus moments "Do you see the light"......... I won't do the full reply from Jake.

Aretha No 1, can't argue with it.

(still think Elvis was vastly overrated)

One of my favorite movies of all time Thad.

Never seen it on DVD in Asia though.

Fair enough, but he is missing from the top 10 is what I meant...

Take Dylan - a fantastic song writer and rock n' roll wouldn't be the same without him, but as a singer I definitely wouldn't put him among the greatest 10 of all time.

His singing sucks. Hendrix too! :o

Can't argue with either of those comments..... Dylan wrote some great songs, performed one? .... I don't think so.

Hendrix was an above average plucker, vocally, nowhere.

//edit/ my opinion may be based in the fact that I have probably consumed far fewer drugs than the people that did get a vote.

Jimi, above average plucker!!! Are you a guitarist? every guitarist I know says he was one of the best ever, if not the best. Agreed about his voice though, it was just okay.

Til you come back to me.............All time great from Miss Franklin.

Karen Carpenter had a voice like a bell ( not a Taco Bell, before Thaddy comments ) and if purity of notes is called for, she and Maire Ni Bhraonain from Clannad hard to beat.

No, I'm not a plucker, I'm a plonker and a frustrated drummer (as most keyboard players are, it's a 'my right foot' thing .... ask any organist)

At least you don't play the pink oboe.....................

Urethra deserves to be #1, imo, with her amazing voice. Especially as she has always looked a bit of a pig.

There's a singer called Urethra?

Urethra Franklyn. You never heard of her? :o

I'm not sure if anyone is slow, or trying to "take the piss" out of someone else. :o

Her name is Aretha Franklin

("Urethra" is the little tube that takes the piss from your bladder to wherever you plan on depositing it).

Is a a bit of a bogus list. Would definitely expect to see Freddie Mercury on there, and Mick Hucknell as Pats mentioned.

Well, we live and learn, eh? :D

I thought her first name was " Ben ".

# 22 - Etta James.

One of my all time favourites.

Tremendous voice. Excellent soul.

When I was a mere lad, a soul boy was I.

Never appreciated different tastes.

Now, old and knackered, Freddie Mercury has become my icon. Marvin Gaye, always in my heart, but Freddie as a star...................Outstanding.
