If I submit my tourist visa application in Penang on Wednesday, will I be able to pick up the visa early enough on Thursday in time to catch the express train back to Bangkok that same day? Or will I have to wait til Friday?

IN in the morning and OUT next afternoon is normal...maybe a gift will help expedite the matter.

Justinjk,  the train back to Bkk leaves at 14.20.  You shouldn't have any problems.

Understand the afternoon hours start at 1400 so the chance is slim, at best, even allowing for late trains.  If you are taking train down you will not be able to submit application until the next morning as it arrives after consulate closes for lunch and they only accept applications in the morning AFAIK.

That would be very tight then.

Maybe catch the train back the day after you pick up your passport.
