Hi folks. I have been trying to find out if raffles are legal over here in Thailand. I know most gambling is illegal except the lottery, but what about raffles. I have tried looking and have seen that some places do and have had some but want to make 100% sure our restaurant/bar can operate one. There will be prizes and the tickets will cost money. Any help on this matter would be great.

Thanks.

I would assume they are.

Just received newsletter from my son's school and they organizing raffle on 29th Fun Run at the Bang Wad Dam. Prices range from 50 to 500 baht per ticket.

Thank you for your reply. Yes, i've heard of them also but we just want to be 100% sure ( if we can ). I've sent a question into Phuket Gazette's "question and answer" section so hopefully they'll get back to me with info from the powers that are. Thanks again. :o

I think you should be fine, we do it all the time. just to be on the side of caution, write down everything accounting wise. that way you're protected by your books.

Thanks. Yes we shall do that. If we get a reply back from the Gazette, i'll post it here.

Raffles are strictly speaking, illegal.

They are the same as a lottery and all lotteries except the government sanctioned lottery are illegal.

All gambling other than the government lottery and some horse-races is illegal. You cannot even play cards in your house for low stakes.

Your raffle, no matter how well intentioned is against the law.
