security guards are not trained and not equipped for the protests.

You would need many thousands of them as well - the protesters are armed with their own water canons (sized fire brigade trucks from town and from the airport) and some other heavy stuff, including firearms.

united airlines are just making money - passengers will have to fend for themselves

I think that UA is only looking out 2 days in the future for their scheduling. It's good business sense to book the revenue (for tickets) now, rather than later, which is why they're taking bookings. Get the cash now, and sort out the scheduling and logistics problems later.

We're booked on the Dec 3 NRT -> BKK flight (rescheduled from Nov 28), but I seriously doubt that it'll depart. I expect it to be cancelled on Dec 1. My uneducated guess is that the first flights will be landing on Dec 5, provided not too much physical damage has been done to the airport's infrastructure.

Sure they are taking the bookings. Get the money up front. But I would not count on there being a flight. As they fly people out, the planes, by assumption have to come back so more people can fly out. Not sure how many inbound passengers are being allowed.
