CrossFit athletes run, row, skip, climb rope and carry odd objects. They frequently move large loads quickly over long distances, using powerlifting and Olympic weightlifting techniques. CrossFit athletes also use dumbbells, gymnastics rings, pull-up bars, kettlebells, and many bodyweight exercises. [6] CrossFit is used in nearly 1,700 gyms worldwide and by many fire departments, law enforcement agencies and military organizations including the Canadian Forces, the United States Marine Corps, and the Royal Danish Life Guards

CrossFit has been "variously portrayed as a fitness company, a grassroots health movement, a nascent sport, a fad, a publishing business and sometimes, disparagingly, a cult."[15][16] Classes at affiliated gyms typically include a warm-up, a skill development segment, and a high-intensity workout that lasts around ten to twenty minutes. Affiliates create a new workout each day called the "Workout of the Day" or "WOD"[17]. Affiliates often use scoring and ranking systems to transform workouts into sport. Some CrossFit athletes use the free workouts and instructional videos available at the CrossFit, Inc. website, in lieu of attending an affiliate

I'm really glad to hear someone is thinking about starting a Crossfit gym out here. I started Crossfitting years ago after I saw this video about the actor training for the movie "300":

Turns out the training they were doing was Crossfit (Though Gym Jones no longer associates themselves with Crossfit if I'm correct). I started researching and ended up joining a Crossfit gym in the US. I was Crossfitting regularly in 2007 and I was in the best shape of my life, without a doubt. Sadly, since coming to Chiang Mai, I've lost most of that fitness. I've always wished there were more Crossfitters in Chiang Mai, because after you've done it, the ridiculous "Body-building" style workouts that most people do just seem like a joke.

Cross fit is interesting & many have latched on to it in some form or another.

Even the P90X types use the term muscle confusion as a way to extend gains.

Of course as you do the same work outs you become more efficient so you gain less. Muscle confusion or cross fit addresses that.

I thought crossfit was something weird, until I looked it up:

CrossFit is a strength and conditioning fitness methodology that promotes broad and general overall physical fitness. CrossFit combines weightlifting, sprinting, and gymnastics.[1] CrossFit says that proficiency is required in each of ten fitness domains: cardiovascular/respiratory endurance, stamina, strength, flexibility, power, speed, agility, balance, coordination, and accuracy. It defines fitness as increased work capacity across all these domains and says its program achieves this by provoking neurologic and hormonal adaptations across all metabolic pathways.[2][3][4] [5]

Here's an update on CrossFit Chiang Mai.

We've got an instructor coming out in about 3 weeks, and should get our CrossFit affiliation up and running mid August.

I've got a container of equipment getting shipped over here (from Rogue Fitness and Again Faster) and that will be here in mid-September.

If anyone knows of a good local store to get barbells and bumper plates, let me know (I'm going to check the place out across from Yuparat on Saturday). We need to get a couple of barbells and some plates before the shipment gets here.

I'll keep you posted.

Just to keep you posted on the equipment, we've ordered rings, barbells and bumper plates, kettle bells, dumbbells, Concept 2 rowers, Rage balls (medicine balls), squat racks, plyoboxes, ab mats and a GHD.

We're going to make our own pull up bars and parrallettes, and other misc. gear (sand bags, etc.).

So keep following the mainpage WODs, and we'll let you know when we open. We're doing this mostly for our own teams of instructors and students, but will be open to the public if there is interest. No idea about prices yet, but we're working on that -- it will be reasonable. The goal is to have a committed community working hard, not to make a lot of money. As long as we cover our running costs, I'm happy.

CrossFit Chiang Mai is now an official CrossFit affiliate.

The first CF affiliate in Thailand, and one of only a few in all of SE Asia.

Go to cfcnx.com for more!

We are NOT YET open to the public, as our gear is not all here, and the gym is still under construction. But the concrete pad is down, and the roof is up.

And we are crushing our students and staff with WODs most every day. :-)

Drop us an email (through cfcnx.com) if you want to drop by and say hello.

We're working on planning when we open to the public -- probably in January. But if you're really keen, we can maybe work something out...
