You obviously missed my point, I was saying that the OP needs to splash out a bit more to have a nice meal at one of the about restaurants otherwise go to a cheap place....such as McDonalds! :D

Ive heard the food in Sirocco & Vertigo isn't up to much, you pay for the view more than anything. The others should be excellent and within your budget.

The food in Baiyoke is "ordinary" to say the least.

There are plenty of "nice" restaurants which don't cost a bomb.

Google "best restaurants in Bangkok" and look at the Tatler list. Cheaper and you'll probably have a more enjoyable time....Unless you're going to propose to your gf? :o

May I suggest a few of my favorites?

Le Beaulieu, the French restaurant on Suk Soi 19.

Lunchtime specials are a deal.

How about Chef Marcos, Bel Guardo in the Paragon.

Incredible restaurant.

Chesa, the Swiss place on Suk Soi 20.

The Swiss owners are on site and run a fine place for food lovers.

Check em out.

Wait one more week and check out the papers, many places will start to promote their Valentine's menu and/or package.

Gianni's Italian on Soi Tonson. Excellent, simply excellent.

Giusto's Italian on Sukhumvit 23, excellent and gorgeous location.

Also, as stated above, the Tatler is an excellent source if information.

THANKS Soi224,

I have walked past Soi Tonson a million times, but never realized that it hold anything of interest. I will try Gianni's as soon as I am back in BKK.

Then, following your budget, let me suggest you to go for the day after...

Plenty of great Sunday brunches, in nice surroundings (I think there is another thread covering this) ; but my classics are : Grande Sukhumvit (Sheraton), Peninsula & Four Seasons (ex-Regent).

At most of these places you will be able to choose either only the buffet; or food + free-flow of wine which will settle a bill for two at around THB 5,000.

I've never been to Lanna Thai on Suk 38 but I've read good reviews.

Google "Face Bar".

My personal favorites for date nights

Yok Yor Marina Restaurant(s) for raw oysters, grilled prawn, som tom and talay pad cha, etc. Actually I have never had anything there that was bad.

Contrazzi on suk soi 11 for Italian and decent wine selection.

Arancini on Phahonyothin for Italian and has great pizza and decent wine selection.

Cabbages and Condoms has great thai food and a nice garden. Bring your mosquito spray.

I also like the sushi buffet in the japanes restaurant at the Landmark.

Just a quickie to say that I found Lan Na Thai at Face to be pretty disappointing. Overly sweetened and creamy Thai fare at very high prices. Lovely joint, but the food is decidedly meh.

And Chesa? I'll admit that this wa my first Swiss restaurant - but I won't be getting too excited about finding another one. Bland, expensive and an uncomfortable dining room. Sorry.

I'd suggest that if you're going to be paying these prices, you should check out Philippe on Suk 39.

Thanks for the tip :o

Won't bother going next week.

Any suggestions for good "thai-style" Thai food in the Suk Area?

I agree. Never had a bad meal there but not outstanding.

Maybe a bit "touristy" for the OP and not "special" enough.

But overall a nice place and it won't break the bank.

I think the Blue Elephant might fit the bill then. Outstanding food, service and ambiance and not nearly as pricey as Sciroco or some of the other hotel restaurants mentioned.

OP,

try the new Zense at central world. Intersting rooftop vista at about 17th floor. not nearly as high as sirocco but not nearly as dear. 4 different kitchens, thai, indian, japanese, italian. Food good everytime i have been. For 5k you could get away with dinner and probably a bottle of wine. Interesting design.

Did you not find the Blue Elephant a bit touristy? (I do love their foie gras drizzled with tamarind, though.)

Yeah it does seem to have a bit of a stuffed shirt crowd but I can overlook that because the thai haute cuisine is that good!!!

Yes, Giannis is one of great restaurants in Bangkok. Has some inventive dishes. Very comfortable in there too.

Lunch specials are a great value.

Paisanos is also just down the street too. Also very good. More traditional I'd say.

Try em both and decide for yourself.

Speaking of Italian. One of my currents favorite spots is Bacco Sergio, just down Soi 53. Close to ThongLor BTS. Sergio is a good man and uses recipes from his home town in Italy.

Go see Marco at Bel Guardo(Paragon) to see Italian food prepared at high levels with prices to match.
