Four held as South's biggest drug network busted

Narcotics police yesterday arrested four men accused of being involved in the largest amphetamine-distribution network in three southern provinces.

A total of 6,000 amphetamine tablets and Bt6 million in cash were seized from the suspects.

Police said the men were linked to Usman Sasameng's amphetamine- distribution network, from which the Narathiwat provincial police confiscated Bt10 million hidden in a plastic tube a few years ago.

Suspects Nhiisor Ningo, 26, Muhamman Rohfa Madeng, 27, and Busaree Yor, 18, are from Narathiwat while Aleeya Joh Aboo, 22, is from Songkla.

Pol Colonel Pitak Iadkaew of the Royal Police's Special Branch Division 1 said the four were arrested in front of the President Hotel in Songkla's Hat Yai municipality. The suspects led the police past a bus terminus to a rental house, where police seized 6,000 amphetamine tablets and Bt6,260,000 in cash. A bronze coloured Toyota Vigo pickup, a Toyota Fortuner, seven mobile phones and other items were also confiscated.

"We followed their activities closely for a while before arresting them," Pitak said, adding that police will trace the rest of the suspects and arrest them.

In another development, Chachoengsao police arrested two Chiang Mai residents they allege are among the biggest drug dealers in Bangkok and sized 140,000 amphetamine tablets. The two suspects are Orpin Saelee, 31, and Werngthing Saelee, 28.

Police say Orapin confessed she sold amphetamines by herself, but insisted her younger brother Wernthing, who is a leather-bag merchant, had nothing to do with the illegal trade.

Police said Orapin is one of the biggest drug dealers to distribute and sell amphetamines in Bangkok and nearby provinces. She smuggled drugs from the North and stored at least 200,000 tablets in her room each month.

"She distributed these amphetamines to small drug dealers in Bangkok. They always change cars when they distribute amphetamines to customers," said police.
