I could live anywhere and it would be interesting, whether i could settle there is a different story, samui doesn't have the mountains i love but it is only a hop skip and a jump from the scuba diving i love too (though that has diminished over the last few years as the pollution is self evident). I guess people who live there want to build a life and community spirit which surpasses interesting but what do i know :o

I'm from England, but left permanently 3 years ago.

I ended up in Thailand via brazil and South Africa, Brazil (Sao Paolo was great - i'd live there again), South Africa, sorry but I don't like carjackings and getting home invasions etc.

Went first to Phuket and really enjoyed the weather, the freedom and the cost of living. I returned to Thailand after a brief trip to India and Sri Lanka and thought I'd try Samui - again, loved the freedom, the friendliness, the fact that if I choose to ride around on a motorbike with no helmet (it being my life to gamble with), I can (and accept a quick fine if I get caught - hey everyone has to make a living)

I stayed primarily because I met a nice girl (on my first week here :o...... no sick buffalo yet), still with her after 2 years now. But other reasons:

- You don't get traffic jams

- Nice beaches, but not at the expense of western comforts (endless restaurants, 4+ supermarkets)

- It's 5 minutes to the airport, and you can arrive 30 mins before your flight - it is well connected (if expensive)

- Oh, and 25 - 25 degrees all year round, and sunny days for 11 months of the year...

I'd happily live elsewhere in Thailand, also i suspect I would live happily in many places in Brazil.

i don't think the answer is complete without answering the inverse to the original question, so:

What made me leave England?

- Sick to death of the increasingly intrusive and micro-management of my day to day life by authorities.

- Bills, bills for water, bills for jumped up brainless coppers to enforce ill-conceived laws, 40% tax, etc etc etc

- Realisation after 1,500,000 people MARCHED in london against the Iraq invasion, and were completely ignored, that the government had passed a milestone and i no longer wanted to live under their control.

- The tiresome racism by a large percentage of British Nationals, targeted periodically towards black people of any nationality, then Indians, then Somalians, then Eastern Europeans ad nauseam... which in more cases than not was professed by lazy, 'white'*, uneducated idiots with free housing and beer and fag money courtesy of the dole, via me and other tax paying Brits and Immigrants that did the jobs they couldn't, or couldn't be bothered, to do.

- The awful weather

- Can't smoke here, can't smoke there, can't party here, music too loud, cant gather there, stop and search, licence for everything ahhhhhhhhhh bugger off government I want some civil liberties please.

- It's expensive

- Luckily my job allowed me to leave!

Phew. Anyway in short, because it is far nicer than England, and better than most other places too!

* (ie a combination of immigrant Europeans via the invasion and interbreeding of Vikings, Saxons, Celts, Romans, etc etc etcetera)

i disagree with your racism thoughts, the uk in my opinion is the most tolerant society in the world, racism in thailand is a billion times worse. Yes you have the ignorant pricks doing the race thing but they are a lot less than other countries.

I guess it depends on where you live / who your family / neighbours are - I agree with you in part - some parts of the UK are generally well integrated and tolerant (London being a primary example), however there are certainly cities and counties where it's rife. I know for a fact that long term residents of one particular council estate in Leicester would burgle and/or harass asian residents as soon as they where housed in the area, and repeat the process until they left.

I know racism is rife here too, from a selfish point of view, my point is that I just don't have to listen to family or friends banging on about the anti-flavour of the month any more!

Anyway yep point taken, not everyne in England is like that. Thailand is nicer to live in though.

I believe it is much hotter up north than it is here... 31-35 C forecast for the southern east coast and 35- 39 C for the North. You might reconsider something much further north than the north of Thailand if you are looking for cooler weather. :D

Every month or so: late afternoon landing at the "boutique airport" (sic...), have a few sessions with my local friends and take the morning boat to Phangan.

Back again (transit) for Songkran!

Hi SH,

Sorry that you've not found it interesting here. I've only been here since November with my partner and our young daughter and we have only seen a very small percentage of the island's natural and tourist attractions with many more visits, planned and unplanned, on our "to do" list.

Once you hook up with a couple of like-minded people as yourself you may well find it easier and more enjoyable to get out and about so maybe you could check out a couple of local "watering holes" and start to socialise?

Please give Samui a chance, the rat race here is certainly better for us (although admittedly it is not perfect here but where is?!) and we've lived in both Phuket and Bangkok.

Best wishes,

"Chalky"

Bali's nice if you don't mind poser Aussie surfers, absolutely all wearing Billabong (without exception). Try treking to the Gilli islands nearby, far more laid back and cool :D

Billabong? I thought it was a popular disco in Samui that went bust....and i was wondering why the street vendors still sell Billabong t-shirt.... :D
