Accident Myanmar Workers Protest Over Healthcare Rights After Factory Death in Prachinburi
Picture courtesy of Khaosod. More than 100 Myanmar workers staged a protest at a factory in Prachinburi, demanding healthcare rights and proper protection under Thai labour laws following the death of a fellow employee in a machinery incident. The protest took place at the Chong Xin EcoWare Technology (Thailand) Co., Ltd. facility, a natural fibre spinning operation located in the Bor Thong Industrial Estate in Kabin Buri District. The workers voiced their anger and grief after discovering that the injured employee, who suffered critical injuries, had no right to hospital treatment under the company’s healthcare arrangements. The worker later died from his injuries. According to authorities, the incident occurred when paper debris became lodged in the mold of a paper-forming machine. The machine operator called a maintenance technician to assist, but failed to switch the machine off. Believing it had been turned off, the technician reached into the machine to remove the blockage. The machine’s robotic arm then struck the technician with considerable force, causing severe injuries. Mr Chaiwat Angkasai, from the Prachinburi Provincial Labor Welfare and Protection Office (LWPO), reported the matter to provincial governor Mr Weeraphan Dee-on. An inspection of the machinery and safety procedures has since taken place and the Provincial Industry Office is issuing recommendations and orders to the company for safety improvements. The protest by the workers highlighted deeper concerns about the company’s compliance with Thai labour laws, particularly regarding healthcare coverage and treatment rights for migrant workers. Protesters gathered outside the factory, demanding answers and assurances that the company would honour their legal obligations. The LWPO had arranged for an interpreter to help facilitate a meeting between workers and company representatives. Officials confirmed that steps would be taken to ensure Chong Xin EcoWare complies fully with the Labour Welfare and Protection Act. Following these assurances, the protest came to a peaceful end. The incident has reignited discussion over the treatment of migrant workers in industrial zones, with calls for stricter enforcement of safety protocols and workers’ rights. Border Desperate Thai Man Drinks Toilet Cleaner at Poipet Immigration Post
Picture courtesy of Daily News A 40-year-old Thai man was rushed to hospital in critical condition after drinking toilet cleaner in an apparent suicide attempt at the Poipet immigration checkpoint in Cambodia. The man, identified as Mr Thanawat from Pathum Thani province, was unable to afford the 10,000 baht overstay fine required to return to Thailand, prompting his desperate act. Security sources reported that although Mr Thanawat possessed valid travel documents, he had been living in Cambodia for over a year. On the morning of July 11, he attempted to cross back into Thailand via the Poipet border but was told he must first pay the fine. Lacking the necessary funds, he reportedly consumed toilet cleaner in the checkpoint’s bathroom, collapsing soon after. Cambodian authorities quickly contacted Thai officials, who facilitated his return under humanitarian grounds. Rescue volunteers from the Aranyaprathet Foundation met him at the midpoint of the Klong Luek border bridge and rushed him to Aranyaprathet Hospital for emergency gastric treatment. As of the latest reports, he remains in hospital under close medical supervision. In a related development, Thai authorities confirmed the return of four more Thai nationals from Cambodia, coordinated through the Thai Embassy in Phnom Penh. Two Thai men voluntarily requested assistance from the embassy to return home. Mr Koson, 30, had been working for an online gambling platform, while Mr Therdpong, 24, was employed as an electrician at a casino in Pailin province. Both men had entered Cambodia legally. Two young Thai women, Ms Matchima, 21 and Ms Aranya Iamsaree, 18, both from Loei province, were also repatriated. They had attempted to illegally cross into Cambodia to work in online gambling operations but were arrested by Cambodian immigration authorities. All four individuals were handed over to Thai officials after checks confirmed no outstanding arrest warrants or criminal proceedings against them. Meanwhile, in a separate incident during the early hours of the same day, a Thai border patrol unit under the Aranyaprathet Task Force apprehended three Cambodian nationals, one man and two women, attempting to illegally re-enter Cambodia via a natural trail behind the Big C supermarket near Rong Kluea Market. Upon questioning, it was discovered the trio had been informal vendors at the market but were forced to leave due to poor economic conditions and declining sales. They had no legal travel documents and were attempting to return home without passing through official checkpoints. Border tensions and undocumented migration remain key challenges along the Thai-Cambodian frontier, as economic hardship and law enforcement crackdowns continue to affect both Thai and Cambodian nationals. Accident Teenager Killed in High-Speed Crash with Lorry
Picture courtesy of SiamRath. A 17-year-old boy has died after crashing his motorcycle into the rear of a lorry in the early hours of the morning of 12 July, leaving his devastated father in tears at the scene. The fatal accident occurred at around 14:00 on Phahonyothin Road inbound, near kilometre marker 37+636 opposite Bangkok University, in Khlong Luang District, Pathum Thani Province. Police investigator Pol. Lt. Anusorn Wiangsima from Khlong Luang Police Station arrived at the scene with traffic officers, forensic doctors from Thammasat University Hospital and volunteers from the Poh Teck Tung Foundation. The victim, identified as Mr Pongthep, aged 17 and a local resident of Khlong Luang, was found lying deceased in the middle of the road. Around 50 metres away, a grey Honda Giorno motorcycle, without a licence plate, was discovered wedged into the back of a stationary white Hino 10-wheeled lorry, registration from Phra Nakhon Si Ayutthaya. The lorry driver, Mr Prawit, 43, was present and waiting for police. He stated that he had been travelling in the middle lane when a motorcycle overtook him. Moments later, he heard a loud bang and saw smoke rising from the rear of his vehicle. Believing he had a tyre blowout, he pulled over. He was en route from Wang Noi to Bang Phli in Samut Prakan. In a twist, several motorists who stopped to assist narrowly avoided serious injuries themselves. Four people were injured during the incident, including three men attempting to direct traffic away from the fallen rider, both of whom were hit by motorcycles. Among the injured was the rider of a Honda PCX and the rider of a black Honda Giorno. All injured parties were transported by rescue teams to Paolo Rangsit 2 and Seekan Hospitals. Poh Teck Tung rescue worker Sgt. Chatchai Jadrith, confirmed that the scene involved multiple collisions and a fatality. He noted the brave efforts of a taxi driver who had also stopped and attempted to help manage traffic before being struck himself. Police have launched an investigation into the cause of the crash. The lorry driver, Mr Prawit, was taken to Khlong Luang Police Station for further questioning. The father of the deceased arrived at the scene and broke down in anguish upon seeing his son’s body. The boy’s mother later said she had no idea where her son had gone that night and only learned of the accident from one of his friends. Mr Pongthep’s body was transported to Thammasat University Hospital’s forensic unit. Adapted by Asean Now from SiamRath 2025-07-13
