For those with a Fortuna, which of the models did you choose for Thailand's roads and why? My friend is leaning towards a 2.7 petrol version for mostly Bangkok and monthly upcountry runs on major roads. Are the 4wd deisels offering any benefit.

Like your friend, I also chose to buy the 2.7 petrol version. My driving profile is the same; mostly Bangkok with occasional trips to the country on major roads. The 2.7V petrol costs about B160,000 less than a 4-wheel drive diesel, much quieter, and does not vibrate when idling. On the other hand, diesel is more economical on fuel and if you plan on driving on unpaved roads the 4-wheel drive will come in handy during rainy season.

I have driven both models and chose the 2.7 petrol. To help you decide you may want to think about renting each model (e.g. from Avis) for a day or two and see which one you prefer.

I have the 2.7 petrol version aswell.. Very happy with it. Only when the car is fully loaded it could use some more power.

I think if would buy a new one i would go for the Diesel though.

More power, better on fuel and you have the smart edition that i like.

Someone told me that the diesel engine in the Fortuner makes less noise then in the Vigo, is that true?

Because i have a vigo and find it quite noisy.

Maybe it has a better noise isolation or something like that.

I got the Vigo 2.5 diesel. It's considerably quieter than the 3.0 - you can hear the engine while driving, but it's much like hearing the petrol engine, not much noise. The 2.5 also goes like a batoutta when you ask it to :o . Averaging 15.3 half around town, half open road. That went up from 14.1 as soon as I put a deck lid on the back.

I went for the 3.0 Diesel 2wd...no complaints whatsoever, quiet, economical, smooth :-) has cruise control but in Thailand not much chance to use it on these roads!!

Why do people keep calling it a Fortuna? Do we have that many people from New Jersey on here? I bought the 4wd Diesel. The new D4D is a great engine, I never have any complaints about vibration, and you've gotta love the nice turbo whistle when you're gettin' on it.

Hi :o

My ex-boss has a 2.7 Litre petrol one, and every time it's in the shop (which is often as he has quite some modifications done to it which regularly fall apart) he rents a 3.0 Diesel one (respectively gets it from the shop for as long as his own is in there).

And meantime he has crashed about 4 or 5 of those Diesel ones - he just can't get used to the fact that the Diesel ones have enough torque to "creep" when "D" is engaged, which his petrol one doesn't. So he keeps on rear-ending cars at traffic lights :D

Oh, and i can smoke him with my 3.0 D-Max (also automatic!)

Best regards.....

i bought an ultimate spec vigo 4x4 , 4 door , auto 2.7 petrol in aug 2005 and loved it .

but i am not going to get another because although it was smooth and very quick off the mark compared to the diesel 3.0 , it was very thirsty and almost impossible to sell off .

thais are not into buying petrol suv's , there is NO demand for them s/hand and it will not shift for months .

shortly i am taking delivery of a new black fortuner trd sportivo and boosting its power to 205 hp with an imported toyota ( so warranty valid - 3 years ) engine upgrade . so it should go like a hooker on charlie .

the 2.7 fortuner is only 2 wheel drive and that my friend , in thailand , is asking for it big time .

Why I could never buy a Fortuner.......

A car designed for the gas greedy USA doing 3 point turns just to get out of the driveway in a soi? When I see that or someone parking one I cannot hide a (slightly annoyed) chuckle.

I had a girlfriend who had the third one in CM some years ago. She asked me to drive it as she found it very difficult to park. Well at 6ft 3 it felt like I needed a periscope to look over the windscreen which is probably why one can only see the eyebrows of Thais driving them. As for them reversing.....watch out.....

Averaging 15.3 half around town, half open road. That went up from 14.1 as soon as I put a deck lid on the back.

.....hmmm impressive.....in a Hummer sort of way!

I mean really if you're going to take more than your fair share of gas and road space, why not get a Range Rover and do it in style?

cheers

Why is 2 wheel drive asking for it big time? Other than some fish tailing on very rough surface hard top roads I haven't noticed much with that model?

Where did you get the 205hp/420 Nm upgrade? Its the spec for same engine in Landcruiser in Europe, but Id like to know where to get it here.

A Fortuner 3,0D4d uses less fuel than Camry2,4/Accord2,4. Measured on 40.000 km each. Thats half the fuel of a Range Rover.

A Fortuner is smaller than Camry/Accord, actually almost a foot shorter.

I like facts

The Fortuner has better noise insulation than the Vigo. I had a Vigo and Fortuner same time, both 3,0D4d auto. Very obvious differnece in noisesupression.

I LIVE 'up country' and although I own a 4-wheel drive (D Max), the chances of actually NEEDING 4WD are more remote than needing a heater IMO.

We chose the diesel auto for practical reasons. We needed a covered space that could be easily converted between people and goods carrying. We also needed good ground clearance. Some of the roads we travel on have potholes big enough to bottom out a standard car.

The diesel is powerful and quiet with plenty of get up and go. The big wheels make easy work of the potholes. Braking is good even when fully loaded. The more solid build also means the car will last longer than a standard car on the type of roads we drive on.

I find the car a pleasure to drive and have no problems parking. My only slight gripe is the tendency to skip on corrugated dirt roads at higher speed. Of all the 4x4’s and cars I’ve owned and driven over the years I really enjoy the fortuner.

True Dave I dont know why people have to have a 4x4 9 out of 10 people only ever use them on the road

I went for the 3.0 D4D Diesel 2wd Fortuna having only 2 wheel drive makes them cheaper to run too

( when engaged ) 4 wheel drive plants itself on the highways during monsoons while in 2 wheel drive it is so easy to aquaplain......scary .

Ai,ai captain.

I have already done this tuneup with one 2005 Fortuner and one 2006 Vigo. Thai made at 35.000 baht.

In Europe they use another auto box for the 204 hp/405 Nm. 5 speed auto, shiftpoint 3.600 rpm. I have increased the cooling of the LOS 4 speed auto/shiftpoint 4.200 rpm autobox by installing one more original oilcooler. It was needed. Its hot here, and much power to be handled.
