Welly, I didn't really want to spend 25 minutes on the road (and prob the bypass road will be flooded too no doubt - and my little Toyota doesn't like it). Plenty of salons round my way but was just hoping for a recommendation. Guess I may have to just pick one and chance it.

i found that looking for a good hair dresser in phuket was near on impossible. then i found George at West 1 Salon. he is wonderful. yes, he is expensive, but you get what you pay for.

i tried cut and curl and they were hopeless. no imagination and they gave me possibly the worst hair cut i have ever had.

West 1 is now located in the colonial style buildings opposite Tesco Lotus.

i know its not Rawai or Nai Harn, but he was the best I found. and i am fussy. he does take appointments too.

I'm told he is too expensive and too full of an inflated opinion of himself . :o

Thanks for that. I presume you mean the big Tesco Lotus north of Central? We have so many Tescos on the island now Donna :D

I actually did find a hairdresser that I liked in Rawai village - I mean, I liked the way she cut my hair but things have just come to a head (sic). Half the time she's not there and it's "will she be there later" mmm yes, "what time later" mmm don't know, and then when I finally find her, book an appointment (or so I thought), turn up and she's got one woman she's cutting, and a manicure and a pedicure all going at the same time - aaarghhh.

Well I'm gonna go out hunting for a hairdresser this morning. Just trying to build up some enthusiasm for driving up the island and it's looking kind of black towards the south-west again this morning - monsoon time :o

We have heard that the stylist(s) at the new salon at the new Tesco Express on Wisit Rd. (just before the flyover heading towards Chalong Circle) are professional and competent to western standards.

Sorry but if George at West One has an over inflated Ego of himself it is because is is the Best in Phuket.

I am tired of bad bad bad haircuts! I hate driving that far on my motorbike, but I will. It is worth it.

Perhaps someone can try the new nice looking salon at the new Tesco center in Rawai?

george at west one is a bit pricey, but worth it in my mind. he understands western hair, and is very competent...i have very curly hair, and i freak out when i go into local salons and they ask me what cut/color i'd like done, and then ask me to refer to photos in books of asian ladies with bone straight hair...not to say i don't use the local shops for great washing and blow-waves/styling...but let's face it...there are somethings you just have to cough up for, and cannot skimp on...for me, paying a bit more for my hair is worth it, if i trust the person cutting and coloring. i safely recommend george to all my friends, and everyone has been happy with the results. if you are worried about the cost...maybe just talk to him and negotiate first? good luck!

Well this is quite a coincidence considering 2 of the replies above. I've just tried the new salon at the TescoLotus@Park in Wisit road which is called Hairwave. It said womens haircut 250 baht on the signboard on Wisit Road but looking at the price-menu outside wash n cut n blowdry seems to be a bit variable. Anyway the guy was very good, very professional and speaks good English (yay!!) though I did practice my basic Thai on him - and the charge was 250 baht - very surprised, I was expecting to pay a little more than that.

Cheers everyone for the replies but nice to be able to recommend someone for a change.

BTW, for the gals, I have very straight hair so quite easy for Thai hairdressers. I know curly hair can be a challenge for some.

I always give new hairdressers a three-time trial period. I've now been using Pat at Hairwave/TESCO center Rawai since late last year, and Pat passed his probationary period last time I went. I'll be going back for a fourth time! He is very responsive. I've made appointments and just walked in, both, and had no waits to speak of. I've also used George three times. When I've asked him to do what I wanted done, he has said instead 'trust me' and left me wishing he had listened. He didn't make it past probation. By the way, though I keep it short, my hair is curly, and if it's not cut right I end up looking something like a poodle. Pat does a great job of styling the cut so that this doesn't happen.

he IS more expensive than others - but you pay about the same as you would pay back in 'the west'. but as for having an inflated opinion of himself, i did not find George like that at all. he knows what he is doing, he does a great hair cut, and he is busy all the time.

of course others may have a different opinion and experience to mine, but i did find that having over 20 years experience in London, he really does know his stuff.

Sounds like I might have got lucky. I did ask his name but couldn't quite get it - the hairdryer was going full pelt at the time (prob not the best time to ask). He's thinning on top and smelled very nice :o rather a lot of aftershave or perfume. Does this sound like Pat?

Pat is young, has his hair a little long on one side, bleached sort of reddish, and parted low on the other side so that he can comb it across his forehead (seems to be some kind of fashion among young Thai l.b.'s as I've seen this style elsewhere). He has bleached the hair on the short side nearly white (above the ear). I think (though I'm not sure) he wears little glasses, too. Sort of a shy smile. Does that help you identify whether Pat was your stylist? I don't recall cologne.

Eh, has been my hairdresser in LoS for 5 years now.

Chalong.

Her salon in about half way down the road to the Pier, on the left, easy to find.

Lovely girl, exceptional service.

I tried him. I have long hair and had already washed it that day so I said I did not need a shampoo. He cut it dry :o and did exactly what I asked him not to (layer the ends) and did a few other things and I will soon be going to George to fix it.

I got what I paid for.

At least that.

As the saying goes, YMMV! I suppose it's possible that George is better with long hair and Pat with short, but I think it more likely has to do with the fact that having lived for a long while in the UK, George understands and speaks English fluently, whereas Pat does not, perhaps laying fertile ground for miscommunication with Pat.

I've been to George three times, and I don't think I got what I paid (a lot) for even once in those three times. I'm pretty sure he understood what I was asking for, but simply chose not to 'hear' me.

At any rate, you got what you paid Pat for :o
