Very, very good start from the new Phuket Governor. Applause.

He speaks at Royal Phuket City Hotel on March 18.

http://www.phuketgazette.net/news/index.asp?id=7193

He speaks about new trees on the road from airport and Phuket town...not about the tuk tuk mafia (may exist only in farang's brains)

He speaks about water in kamala...not about the "private" beaches all over Phuket...

He speaks (very, very important matter) about the foreign tour and dive guides...not about the assault in Rawai and Chalong area...

Applause again

How about these excerpts from Phuketwan

http://phuketwan.com/tourism/phuket-governor-top-diamond/

Quotes from the new guy--

"But in principle, safety-conscious captains should encourage the wearing of life jackets at all times. Phuket needed a campaign for safety at sea in much the same way as road safety campaigns had been conducted."

1st of all can you see a bunch of divers on a dive boat wearing life jackets like some of the Asian tour groups? Yes lets eat shower and sleep with a life jacket.

2nd. What road safety campaigns? giving out a free teddy bear? Ticketing for no helmets?

"The economy is a priority. Tourists need to be given a good impression. Phuket is famous, but there are other rival destinations in other countries."

That is deep and introspective. :D

"Security another priority. Tourists need to feel comfortable and safe. "

What about all the Thais too?

We all need to BE safe.

"Garbage The island was small but had many people living or visiting, so garbage disposal is a priority. ''If Phuket is not clean, tourists won't come,'' he said."

its filthy already.. has he not noticed.

Did anyone notice all the plastic in Kata ? Probably had to do with the illegal trawlers that finally got noticed.

"is plan is to consult local people before making major decisions"

I hope he consults more then that.

He and his wife look like they are stuck in a time warp.. :o

Considering that he has already insulted a senior member of the foreign diplomatic corps and earned the disdain of other embassies by his attitude, he's off to a good start indeed. I'm sure his approach to management will certainly help him when he moves on to private industry after his term. Anyone else see him as one of the greeters at a Carrefour? Talk is cheap. Let's have some action.

Instead of everywhere road widening so the Thais can still drive in the middle

money needs to be invested in increasing Police salaries so they don't need the back-handers and can get on and do something positive about the Tuk Tuk mafia and the jet ski hooligans, amongst many other things

I don't think Phuket is at all bad on the litter front; far worse in parts of England.

Was this reported somewhere? how do you know or is it just a given? Just curious.

Exactly what I was thinking when I read the article - no mention whatsoever of public transport. I guess the airport limo thugs, the tuk-tuk thugs and the "rent-a-jeep, this is my private parking space next to the beach" thugs are just too big for him to take on.

Or maybe they form a large part of his "salary" that he doesn't want to lose.

The ex governor tried to take on the bad boy's and because he trod on some toe's he was quickly dispatched up north. Cant see the new head doing much yes he's already upset people. not any answears to the real prblems like the Tuk Tuk problem the scamming problem seems to be setting himself up to line his pockets and disregard the real problems.

Though we all know already, I just have to say - I really really love those well mannered and very very poor Tuk Tuk drivers whom have such a terrible life
