New Thai Movie: Sassy Player (dtaew Dte Dteen Ra-bert)

If you enjoy Thai comedies especially if you saw and enjoyed the Satree Lek kathoey volleyball team movies, and really anyone and everyone, see Sassy Player (Dtaew Dte Dteen Ra-Bert).

I saw it. I laughed. I was entertained. There is something for everyone. Don't think it is only a ladyboy movie or only for gays, it is for everyone. It is in no way whatsoever a gay movie.

In fact, I would say the movie is pro ladyboy and anti-gay because it reinforces the Thai cultural bias that gay male homosexuality equals kathoey.

In fact, in this movie:

ladyboys are good

regular masculine homosexuals are bad and a parents worst nightmare

boys who are gay group up to be ladyboys not regular more masculine homosexuals

lesbians are cool

while having no characters that are or turn out to be "regular" homosexuals, there is eye candy aplenty for both real life homosexuals and the ladies

And I must add, there is a very interesting POLITICAL angle in the movie in the closing scene REDS vs. YELLOWS. It is not subtle. It is blatant. It is pro unity for all Thais and that is good. It is not anti-farang (or pro farang) and that is good. But ultimately their main argument that Thais red and yellow should unite is to be united to FIGHT foreign countries. That's kind of sad. I can think of much better reasons why Thai people should unite.

But it is only a movie. Have fun!

I predict this will be a big box office hit in Thailand but when it makes the film festival circuits internationally, people will have no idea about the RED/YELLOW scene.

Some of Thai movies are not worth watching, but I like Satree Lek 1 and 2. So I think I should try on this one
