My wife and I are going to Laos for a short break. We have decided to drive to Nong Khai, leave the car there, take the bus into Vientiene then up to Luang Prabang.

We will only be away for a week or so but need somewhere secure to leave the car in Nong Khai.

Can anyone give me a tip?

The last time I passed through Laos on my way to Vietnam I had to get US dollars for the visa, do they take baht at NK?

Thanks,

Colin

You might want to talk with the Nong Khai Hotel Manager, we did, he arrange with Hotel security to watching the car, this was for three days about 5 years ago. A friend, Dave is good friends with the Toyota Dealers ship owner and he left his car/keys(10days) with owner in case they need to move the car. :o:D Good luck enjoy your trip>

if you talk to pantawee hotel they will keep your car for a small fee at their parking lot. they accept Baht at the laos border but it is cheaper to pay in $

Thanks Rick. I will do that, we don't intend staying in NK too long as I have a good place nominated in Vientiene.

Where am I supposed to get $US? I guess there might be money changers at the border but my experience is they are reluctant to change baht into dollars.

1300 it is I suppose...

I think the Lao visa costs US$35 or 1300฿. Not much difference but I think they prefer dollars.

I actually think that they prefer Baht. Even if you pay in Baht you will get a receipt for $. You pay more if you pay with Baht, but it goes through the book as $, so who do you think pockets the difference? :o

There are Parking Places, not far from the border, I sometimes park in the fenced Parking spot right hand side before the border,

about 2-300 m from the border.

Where the road from Nong Khai and the road to the border from the Highway connect.

Should not be so expensive, I usualy parked only some hours for my Visarun.

But now, since some time, I just park on the roadside, which also works well.

I maybe a little reckless with my parking.

End of January I drove to Hat Lek, the border place to Koh Kong in Cambodia,

I planned to stay only for some days in Cambodia and as I did not see a sign for a Parking place,

I just stopped on the big place before the border in front of shops on the roadside.

I stayed than much longer in Camb. than I thought and came back after 40 days!

And, my car was still there, but I tried to avoid to see the shopowner where I had parked in front for so long time.

All went well, I could -escape- unrecogniced.

Left my rent a car at the parking place about 300 meters before the border, on the western side of the road direct opposite the road to nong khai. They have long car ports with metal type awnings. They'll give u a lift to the border in a small truck and back as well just ring em. I has no problems.

Go to wikimapia and should be able see the place its been marked.

That "caged" parking area where you catch the van/bus across the bridge is good, I've been parking there for 15 years or so. Most recently, last December, left my car there for eight days, no problem. Cost is baht 100/day which is worth it for the apparent security.

Thanks for the information,

I had the opinion, that you cannot park directly on the border, also there is always enough place.

I remember some years ago, when I started using that borderplace, that they told me to drive back and park elsewhere.

Or I understood them wrong?

Anyway, when I park some hours, I place my car on the roadside, in short walking distance from the customs,

what, until now did not made a problem

agreed 100% - we parked there under the awning for 5 days in January and had no problems - 100B per day

You can get $ at places which offer a buying and selling rate. I have also seen SCB reluctant in Pattaya but when the $ was around 31 I wasn't giving the little Cambodia <deleted> a near Bt400 tip from the Bt1000 they want for the visa.

Not sure if you would get $ at every bank in the NE thuogh.
