What? irony? I thought irony was supposed to be funny.......:)

No, the OP sounds American, like John Denver. We Americans don't do irony well. The British are ironic. Too much iron in British ale.

Texans, Californians, New Yorkers, and Miamians are somehow not considered to be "regular" Americans by most of the rest of the population.  :D

The fact that the majority of the American population did not get the irony in the New Yorker cover is probably a good indication that as a whole, we don't do irony well.

The Thai you see today is the result of general assimilation and high birth-rate for many some decades ago. ie. in the early 70s the birth rate was 3%+

According to several observations/sources, the population of Thailand at 1900 is estimated at around 5 millions.

In late 30s - early 40s There was a patriotic song singing of "18 million Thais".

In the old Southeast Asian days, people is the society resource not land. At war, the winner took prisoner to "re-locate" them in thier town. Let them farm and pay the tax. They blend in very fast and the next generation of after not so many years came back to fight people in ther former town. More useful than getting the ransom or killing them outright.

So, loyalty the the chief is different fron highly populated society like Japan.

Beside, we burn the deads so there is no cemetary to cling to.

Interest group changing is very natural here, th best sample is members of Political Parties.

PS:

In early 20 century, land was still plenty, you can own as much as you can farm.

In the 40s, land was still so cheap. There was a story that a famous hunter agreed to by large piece of land in Bangrak, BKK. On the way he passed gunshop and use that money to buy a double rifle instead...
