Just my not so humble opinion - but I am a bit old school and believe a photography competition should be images as captured in the camera - without digital enhancing or retouching.

A strong image should be able to stand on it's own - both compostionally and technically.

keep shooting

I somewhat agree with the above statement. However, with the technical advancement of digital cameras a lot of postprocessing can now actually be done on the camera.

Film photographers also use PP to a certain extent but in a darkroom instead of a PC.

For those in possesion of a Canon camera this link will take you to the CDHK website where you can download a free utility and scripts that are installed onto your memory cards. The program/scripts will enable you to get the most out of your Canon

Major CHDK features

RAW - CHDK can record raw files, giving you access to every bit of data the sensor saw, without compression or processing. Raw files can be manipulated on the camera, or processed on your PC. CHDK also has experimental support for the open DNG raw standard.

Override Camera parameters - Exposures from 64s to 1/60,000s with flash sync. Full manual or priority control over exposure, aperture, ISO and focus.

Bracketing - Bracketing is supported for exposure, aperture, ISO, and even focus.

Video Overrides - Control the quality or bitrate of video, or change it on the fly.

Scripting - Control CHDK and camera features using ubasic and Lua scripts. Enables time lapse, motion detection, advanced bracketing, and much more. Many user-written scripts are available on the forum and wiki.

Motion detection - Trigger exposure in response to motion, fast enough to catch lightning.

Edge overlay - Detect the edges in a scene, and display them later. Ideal for timelapses, stop-motion, stereography and much more.

Live Histogram - CHDK includes a customizable, live histogram display, like those typically found on more expensive cameras.

Zebra-Mode - Displays under and overexposure areas live on the screen.

GRIDS - Create custom grids and display whichever one suits your shooting conditions.

Multi-Lingual Interface - CHDK supports about 22 languages, and adding more languages is simple.

DOF Calculator - Display detailed DOF information on the screen.

Customizable OSD - Improved display of battery status, free space, camera parameters, and much more. Fully customizable with an on-screen editor.

Filebrowser - Manage files without a PC.

Textreader - Display text files on your camera.

Games - Play Reversi, Sokoban, Mastermind or 4-in-a-Row on your camera.

USB remote - Simple DIY remote allows you to control your camera remotely.

Benchmark - Compare the performance of your SD cards.

User Menu - Edit your own customizable User-Menu for fast access to often used features.

Give me a shout if you should install it and for some reason run into any problems.

Even my little point and shoot has a ton of options that i dont concern myself with to be honest, I am too busy trying to find the right angle and light. The attached are a few quick snaps i took around the yard and house the other day.

Nothing to write home about but looking for the right angle (getting lower) and texture helps to bring the ordinary to life a bit.

" I am a bit old school and believe a photography competition should be images as captured in the camera - without digital enhancing or retouching."

Sorry but that's absolute nonsense, I spent way more time in the darkroom trying to get my prints right than I do now behind the computer.

Ansel Adams was the absolute master of postprocessing his work to get the print he wanted. His only disadvantage was that he had to do it in the dark in the stench of photo chemicals.

Any chance of just keeping this thread to "CLOUDS" entries? :D

Good idea :)

This would also make life a little easier for Sir Kan Win when he sets up the voting poll. I'll start a new topic on CDHK

You are entitled to your opinion as am I. Perhaps just, if AA wasn't constrained by the limits of silver halide and had today's camera technology he wouldn't have had to spend so much time in the darkroom perfecting his images-as fantastic as they are.

But really not my point, the foundation of any standout image is in its composition and lighting and while there is nothing wrong with a burn or dodge now and again, when more time is spent on photoshop than actually in the process of photography itself, it loses something.

You may call it nonsense, I may call it something else, but I bet that if u recall the 10 most striking _interesting photos that u have seen during your life, most if not all were pretty much original in form.

For me, if an image seems too perfect, subconsciously I feel something less natural about it and less like life itself.

Cheers

I know it's a clouds competition but just for a minute.........

Do you remember (some 10 years ago I think) when a challenge was thrown down to replicate Ansel Adams work.

Many photographers gathered at the various locations all equipped with the best equipment available. Perfect light, modern darkrooms/lightrooms, some shot digital and others film.

Considering they we competing against images shot some 50 years earlier is was no surprise ..................... when they all failed and agreed they had !

Makes ya think eh?

It also makes one think when you enter State / National competitions of the Professional Photographers of America / Canada and so on, that you have to submit an original un-retouched version of your photo. Guess that's why they have seperate categories for retoucheres and digital artists.

Canon S51S. 1/80S. FL 6.00mm. 1/8. Eq 38mm ISO 200.

First I tried Canon Photostitch to try and get one panorama, but I screwed it up. These things move too fast.

The photo above was shot minutes after the Reds made their final retreat to Government House after running battles with the army all day in the Pratunam / Din Daeng neighborhood .

I hope that similar events do not occur tomorrow.
