World Blood Donor Day 2009 in Phuket

PHUKET CITY: -- The Phuket Chapter of the Thai Red Cross Society is encouraging people to make merit by donating blood on June 14, World Blood Donor Day.

The event, organized by the Blood Bank at Vachira Phuket Hospital, will take place at Bangkok Hospital Phuket on Yaowarat Road in Phuket City starting at 1pm.

The World Health Organization (WHO) recognizes World Blood Donor Day annually on June 14, the birthday of Karl Landsteiner.

The Austrian scientist in 1900 discovered the ABO blood group system that eventually made safe blood transfusions possible and saved untold millions of lives.

For those who cannot donate on Sunday, the blood bank at Vachira Phuket Hospital accepts donations daily Monday to Friday (8:30 am to 8 pm) and Saturday and Sunday (8:30 am to 3 pm).

Member of the public are invited and encouraged to make blood donations and view activities at Bangkok Hospital in Phuket to commemorate the World Blood Donor Day on June 14th. Vice Chairman of the Red Cross Phuket chapter, Narawat Ratasrima, said the event will provide opportunities for blood recipients to thank blood donors and those who support or are behind the donations. International Red Cross, World Health Organization designated June 14th to be World Blood Donor Day. The global theme for 2009 is ‘achieving 100 per cent non-remunerated donation of blood and blood components’, which places a renewed emphasis on improving the safety and sufficiency of blood supply. As more and more countries achieve the goal of 100 per cent voluntary non-remunerated blood donations, there is growing appreciation of the vital role of voluntary donors who donate blood on a regular basis. Not only are they the safest blood donors, they are also the foundation of sustainable national blood supplies that are sufficient to meet the needs of all patients requiring blood and blood components.
