Torrenting
I’m not here to tell anyone what to do, however, I suggest posters just think about free streaming or download websites. Regular people do not just setup mass streaming servers for no profit, these sites are generally Russian, North Korean or Chinese run, they are flakey at best. They are run to make money from dodgy popups and data harvesting. They are just one part of the tech wing of organized crime groups, the servers are housed in shipping container data centers in Europe. One popular defense is that “I use a popup blocker”. Yes, you can use popup blockers, but the popup and malware still comes to your computer, it is sitting there, I guess it would be in your web cache, it’s just you don’t see it or the button to press. There are still trackers embedded in the website code. You aren’t going to get a virus from the actual video file, but there are reasons that these sites exist. They may be “OK” to use now, but in the future are you have been drawn into a false sense of security, who knows? Would you be happy to let surplus processing power be used by the North Koreans to mine bitcoin in exchange for watching a bit of TV? Streaming servers on this kind of scale use a bandwidth, this isn’t free. To counter this, they reencode the video and audio to lower bitrate. If it works for you, then it’s no problem, but personally I don’t have time for low quality audio and video. There is also talk about malware in the subtitle files from these sites, or when you accept to stream the subtitles, you compromise your network. Tbh, no one cares about torrenting any longer, the music and video streaming platforms have changed the way we consume media - most people just roll over and pay for streaming services, the number of people using torrents offset against the whole world having a Spotify account is minuscule. Music artists and record companies dont need to sell physical media any longer, they can give it away free. TV companies have shifted, and you get their content “free” with your internet subscription. A few years ago BBC was playing cat and mouse with the VPN industry, nowadays, they have given up, imho, they would probably go free to all territories if it wasn’t so tied down with the UK TV license. Anyway, I just wanted to post a warning. Some members may not be so tech-savvy, maybe someone mentioned these free streaming sites as a good way to access content, just be aware they aren’t necessarily safe.
