hi. my name's pete and i'm 28. i'm going to be upping to bangkok in a couple of weeks to start work. i'm quite excited and all - but... i've (apart from uni and i think that's different) never moved to another place, lest of all another country, where i didn't know a single soul. how did you guys find it when you first moved here? is it fairly easy to meet people, particularly other westerners? i'm quite keen on making a good start to bkk and i guess am a little nervous about the "billy-no-mates" thing that i'll have when i arrive!

any suggestions etc would be very welcome :)

hi to everybody btw!

oh yeah - i thought this was the most appropriate forum, but if there's a better one please advise :D

You mentioned 'I wouldn't know if this is the right forum,' but as they say.... he who dares wins.

Welcome Pete, aged 28. I notice that most newcomers keep there identity private but you're obviousely very comfortable with who you are! Nice one.

You'll be 'Billy with too many mates' in Bangkok I can assure you, an outgoing person that you are.

Enjoy Thailand for what it is.

Regards Bojo

Pete , you dont say what your going to do here or how long your going to stay . If your coming for work then you will meet many people in the job that will show you about . Take care of your money !! Becareful of the scam artists , many . Dont trust the ladies of the night . Enjoy your time here but have a good read about anything and everything Thai to get the full picture. As for Forums - this is the best one by a long shot.

oh yeah, should have mentioned that i'm a software engineer. as for how long; i don't know yet! a while at least. as for things to watch out for: i've spent time in thailand before so i'm less worried about all that than i am the social side of it. i'm engrish so going to the pub alone is not something i'm used to. i'm quite interested in hearing how everyone else found it when they came here and how they went about building a decent social network. i can speak a little thai but it's that cursory thai that alot of foreigners speak! can't read very much at all at the moment (restricted to the first 10 consanants and a couple of vowels!) but i'm planning on getting lessons fairly swiftly. thanks for the advice.

If you have been here before I think no advise is needed.

Hi Pete, to answer your question where to meet people, try the Crossbar in Suk 23 nice bunch of guys - all different, the owner Brian will introduce you I am sure to other Thai Visa members, the drink is cheap and the food is good too.

If you are interested in football thats a bonus as the footy crowd go there most weekends. Ask for Mr Toad (Martin) one of his offices is there. LOL he is a good guy too.

Becareful.

that's great - precisely what i was after - thanks, i'll give that a try.

Welcome and just be yourselfe....sure you will be happy and have lots of fun...what about work, will there be colleagues you may socialise with???

thanks for the message. re: work - there's a few foreigners that work there, but i'm not sure to what extent they might be wanting to socialise. will of course see. in my experience with this kind of work there's less of a social scene as there is in other areas. this of course does depend on the company etc but it seems us geeks don't like to hang out with each other after work! i've always been a consultant though - which does make it harder to form relationships as you're normally out of there within a few months. this time it'll be a bit different with regards to that.

btw: i'm not at all discounting socialising with thais - but my main concern is socialising with foreigners; there being an abundance of thais in thailand i'm not sure i'll have too many problems meeting them!

Hi Pete, I've been travelling to BKK on and off on business for the last 20 odd years. Just a few days at a time. That makes me far from expert but I've never been bored and have always struck up a conversation with like minded people in bars, restaurants etc. So will you. Now I'm looking to move there from Dubai to finish off my expat perambulations. I am looking forward to it immensely. Work must come first though....then play. Good luck with your new job. Len :)

Hi Pete,

Another newbie here, I have just moved here myself from the UK, My name is Alex(andra).

If you want any company in your search, just let me know ... :D

Run a search for Bangkok Young Professionals. I know friends who were a similar age when they first arrived, they quickly developed acquaintances at first and then friends. I guess it's sometimes difficult without a wingman but I think its a good start for people planning to stay a while.

Other alternatives are joining a football team (IF you play football that is).

Good luck.

My name is Alex as well, ha ha ha!

Alexlah, Lalex, he he he, think you have been spying on my name. :D

:D

Hi Alex - Ok you caught me :) ...

Maybe I am not such the super stealthy ninja type you depict me as since I got caught :D

Are we allowed two Alex's on here ... or should I start the process of changing my name ??

No La, ha ha ha!

Lalex is a nice name, I like it and I think we can make a lot of fun here with these similar names.

I mean you could be my digital twin sister or summin like that, backing up each other when attacked on the forum.

:)

That could be quite time consuming - covering His back - just look at the off topic thread to see his humour :)

Back in BKK in September so hope someone arranges a meet up in October - the piss ups are usually good.

My conversations with myself are normally of a much more mundane nature :)
