Edge "data Drip" For 2g Iphones

Recommended Posts

Ok so discovered my gprs internet minutes on my iphone have been steadily growing even with Edge turned off in the new sbsettings that is compatible with 3.0.

Took a look online and everyone is having this problem, I think specifically 2G phones. You turn off edge but a small amount (40 to 60 minutes) is still getting used per day. That adds up fast. So far it looks like turning off push might be the answer (settings, mail, fetch new data turn it to off). I will post again in a couple of days to see if it really worked.

Is that anything new?

If you set your fetching data setting to anything except off, it will go and get your mail every 5 minutes / 30 minutes / hour, depending on settings, so clearly it would use up your minutes. Nothing to do with push.

That's why I always had it off.

No you dont understand. Guess you dont know what bossprefs and sbsettings are. Those 2 applications turn off your edge/gprs. Before 3.0 this worked fine. It kept your iphone from charging internet minutes no matter what. Now with 3.0 and sbsettings it turns off edge but still always a small bit of information to get through. A lot of people are complaining and it looks like its because it still always has "leakage" if push is on, it doesnt actually push anything as you cannot get email with gprs turned off, but some information is getting through and eating minutes. Understand what I mean?

Most people won't notice until their next bill, I however check my internet usage daily and have noticed it going up even though I cannot connect to the internet or get emails or anything.

I had this problem until I turned off "location services" and "push" for email. These periodically go online for updates. Do you have these turned off?

Guys - as I understand it, there is no true push on the Thai networks - the meter starts from the moment ya log in.

With 3G and similar plans, one is always on or connected. I know that in other 3rd worlds, when the 3G net goes

AWOL - which is often, all my downloads are treated as GPRS and billed per byte - ergo more money. My dime.

No, I do understand. What's new is that bossprefs doesn't work with the 3.0 update, or, to put it another way, it now has bugs. Before bossprefs worked fine for turning off all internet access, after 3.0 that doesn't work anymore.

That's not surprising given the magnitude of the update and the fact that these were always unsupported by Apple and using undocumented APIs. Likely some of these undocumented APIs changed and so stuff doesn't work like before. My Cydia apps are now very unreliable as well, even though they got updated for 3.0. They were rock solid on 2.2...

Yes exactly and I'm thinking with everyone being forced to switch to sbsettings they are in for a nasty surprise when they see their upcoming bill. I started checking right away and saw it adding 40 to 60 minutes a day, every day. So I researched and saw that many people are complaining about sbsettings.

I'm pretty new with the iphone so excuse my ignorance with some of the tech talk. All i wanted to share is the information i got from ais service centre. Problem was that my phone was connecting via edge and i wanted to disable this. I followed their instructions which i posted and it seems to disallow me from surfing via edge.

guess this only works for ais. called them up and they instructed to put "multimedia" in the vpn settings and leave password and user blank.

Seems to do the trick.

Does the trick for what? Im on AIS.

Ahh ok sorry, I didn't know what you meant. Ya that is the hard way of disabling edge, that means every time you do want to get connected you need to go into settings and retype the APN. Its a pain in the ass. The program we mentioned earlier "sbsettings" is a simple toggle switch on your main screen that enables and disables internet. And after 2 days of testing I can say it works perfectly as long as you have push and location turned off. The way you describe actually doesnt seem to work anymore if you upgrade your phone, it will not save the new apn setting, if you type it in and exit settings, it clears the apn and does not change it so does not disable edge. Think this is new with 3.0

I'm on version 3 and it saves the settings. I guess this works best for me as i don't want to use edge at all.
