No free travel on new BTS after October

BANGKOK: -- HRH Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn will preside over the official opening of the 2.2 km Skytrain extension across the Chao Phya River on August 23, at the Wongwian Yai station.

Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA) Deputy governor, Theerachon Manomaipiboon announced this yesterday - together with the end of the free-of-charge travel that has operated on the extension since May 15.

He said a flat rate fare of Bt15 would be charged for the Saphan Taksin, Krung Thon Buri to Wongwian Yai stations from October. After the new extension had entered the Bangkok Mass Transit System (BTS) system, fares would be calculated by the distance travelled and submitted for the Bangkok Council's approval.

The new fare collection was to have been introduced on August 13. However it has been put forward to October in celebration of August as HM the Queen's birth month.

Theerachon also commented on the Transport Ministry's Office of Transport and Traffic Policy and Planning poll on who should build the Skytrain extensions from Mo Chit to Saphan Mai, and from Baring to Samut Prakan - the Mass Rapid Transit Authority of Thailand (MRTA) or the BMA.

He said the people's benefit would be prioritised, no matter which agency built the extensions. He said the BMA's plan for an elevated railway extending from Mo Chit station onward was more convenient for commuters than the MRTA's scheme to start the extension from Phaholyothin subway station.

He said a conclusion would be drawn at next week's meeting between the Transport Minister and BMA Governor.
