I'm about to sell a vehicle, but I really have no idea what price to try to get. Is www.taladrod.com pretty much the going rate for used cars all over the country?

Yes i belive it is, but not sure of the "all over the country"-bit as I only know the Bangkok market.

Also check one2car.com

Recently bought a 2nd hand car and my guesstimate is that a private owner sells for about 10% less than the dealers.

Maybe best option is ask at a Tent what they would give for your vehicle.........

Look at other tents + online and see what they are selling for.....

Try selling somewhere in between......

Myself looked at 2 different 1.8 CD 2000 and 2001 model Zafira this month, both Private in top condition and both with the original owner from new.. Also looked a tents near where I live and found that the same year and model were 80 - 100k more + none were 1 owner.

Hello mnbcm, since you are in Chiang Mai, advertise at the top end of the price range. Vehicles tend to sell much higher in Chiang Mai than in Bangkok or Isaan for example. I just spent about two months looking for a used car in C.M. (many on www.taladrod.com) and in my opinion, they were all over-priced. When I found a car that I was satisfied with, I successfully negotiated a price 25,000 Baht less than the asking price. So start high and settle on a price you are comfortable with. Remember, used cars reatin a higher value in Thailand than in Europe or America.

After checking out prices of vehicles of a similar age and condition in private ads, advertise higher than you want/expect but not so that you would frighten everyone off.

Also state that you are open to negotiation and people will think that they are going to be able to buy the car for alot less than you are prepared to drop. This way they will rush to view and even if they still can't buy at their expected low price, if the vehicle is what they want and still at a reasonable price, they could well buy. happy trading!

You will always get a better deal selling privately, tents will rob you blind. Do the research, price it fairly and advertise everywhere, (especially those places with good search results!)

As the dealers buy from private owners at that rate that's would not be much of a profit. I reckon they make up to 30-40% perhaps even 100% sometimes - a Pattaya dealer recently offered me less than half the money I was able to get for a car by private sale. Use the car web sites as a guide then discount around 20-25% and you'll have a quick easy sale.

It is always comforting to note that used car salesmen, globally, are all douches

Bubba

BTW Spend decent money on getting the auto properly detailed, in & out, before ya sell it.

Strange as I have bought both a car and a motorbike from CM and moved them to Phuket.. Phuket seems to be a lot higher than CM

You are right sir, and I know how much the tent dealers wanted to pay the guy I bought from, they offered 1.050.000 bath for a car Chevrolet dealers sells for 1.400.000 as 2nd hand, I payed 1.085.000 after some dealing.

If you look for a Chev Captiva 2.0 LT 2008, full option and with some extras on one2car, you can see what the tents sell them for, I belive its around 1.250.000.

The price of used cars was shocking when I first arrived! I've been following taladrod and one2car for awhile and wasn't sure if that was a good gauge of prices. Thanks for all the replies!

Maybe so. I was referring to Bangkok and Isaan. I have no idea what the prices are in Phuket. I never looked.

Does anyone know the actual procedure for selling. Is it just a question of taking the cash and handing over the vehicle book to the buyer?

No it's not that little bit. I think most of cars can buy from private partie about 20 to 30'000 Baht and sell it for 200 or 500'000 Baht. Have to make a living.

There are always some kind of "mini dealers" who acting like a private person. They working something else or nothing and dealing beside several cars a month only by andvertising (news papers, internet, thaivisa, or advertising board), not spend any money for renting a shop (tent) or pay any taxes or dealerlicenses fees or support any workers. And some of customers beleve they buy from private partie, mosthly for almost the same price as in the used car tents. If you look the prices of market cars, like Honda Toyota, , are almost always the same (plus minus 10'k), doesn't matter if it's from private partie or dealer. Finance companies controls the prices. Of corse you are saometime beable to buy a for example 75'k Suzuki Jeep (for example) with a lot of rust, in a junk condition from someone who try to sell it privatly, because no dealer want buy or trade in their car. The dealer offer sometime the same car for 140'k, but in good condition (not a project). There is the reason for the difference. Used car deralerships are same any other businesses and everyone have to make a profit to make a living. Some peaple need urgent money and the dealer gives them money if the car is right, so it's similar like the stock market. Peaple invest to make profit. Some peaple who don't have knowledge in the business, invest and loses.

So back to the topic: I recomment if the seller doesn't need instant cash, he can try to sell it privately. Why not, it's better value for him. But if the seller don't like to deal and hassle with paperwork and customers (some customers sometimes are just timewaisters and complain about everything), than he can sale it to a dealer and let them do their job.

It's similar thing like a educating. You can learn by computer, wich is cheaper or you can go in a University and learn by teacher, wich cost more. Students are willing pay for the teachers expirience.

I love the comparison between used car dealers and University Professors. Perhaps we are all dumb for not buying from used car dealers like Stingray. Fascinating.

Regarding the poster obove:

I don't know why you hate used car dealers. I had a mad teacher, when i was a 13 year old boy. He hit us regulary with the wooden stick. But it doesn't mean that i hate all Teachers now.

But in your case i can't undestand why you have to sell and hiding your used cars behind the School and transportation office, where you working. How many cars or motorbikes did you sell or at least advertised on TV in the past 2 years? My question: Are you a used car dealer or a University Professor?

Personally I never said I hate used car dealers and I am not a dealer so you are wrong on both counts, I have sold 2 cars in two years and neither for profit I lost money on both, does that make me a dealer? I am no threat to your business Stingray don't get all worried. All I said was that some dealers make a profit and you can't deny that. Don't take things so personal Stingray the comments on here are general. I HAVE had some bad experiences with car dealers in Bangkok and I am allowed to say so on this forum without criticism from you. I have never had anything to do with your business and I am not running it down. If you have personal comments to make to me then use the PM service please so you don't waste everyone's time, or perhaps you want to private mail like you did last time and hide behind anonymity. I can publish your email if you can't remember. I am sorry your teacher beat you, most teachers are not like that as I am sure you know. Perhaps your life story belongs in another thread though.

Good luck Stingray, maybe you want to move on now though, you seem to have a lot of resentment towards me, sorry about that, I'm a nice guy really. I am sure you are too. Please buy a car from Stingray everyone and let's get back to the topic.
