Confused On The Little Details

Featured Replies

Hello all,

I have a few questions about teaching in Thailand. I have done some research to know the requirements but I am getting confused in the minefield of little details.

My plan is to go to Thailand for 3 months, in the first month I intend to study "Introduction to Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL)" with the ECC. However, I am getting stuck on this first point as I keep hearing different things about what certification is required. Is this course enough to get a decent teaching job in Thailand?

Secondly I have a degree in "BSc Computer Systems & Networks (Hons)" and was wondering if this is even suitable to obtain a teaching job in Thailand?

Lastly, I am looking at getting a 60 day tourist Visa and extending it an extra 30 days to make the trip last a total of 90 days. I was wondering if it was possible to get a job and the relevant paperwork completed before my Visa expires given that I will be using the first 2-3 weeks studying and adjusting to my new surroundings?

Thanks in advance for your help,

James

You do not need a Bachelor's degree or a TEFL/TESOL to teach in Thailand. The number and location of schools where you can teach will be increased by having a degree and any other qualifications.

You may be able to find a job, however, the paper work will most certainly not be completed in the time frame you mention.

Best of luck.

As far as your visa goes, go to a Thai consulate and get a Tourist visa with 2 reentries. With the reentries and the 30 day extensions you will be able to stay in Thailand for 9 months. This is what I did when I first moved here. This should give you plenty of time to find a job, and sort out details. Good luck! :)

Some TEFL courses will help you obtain a 1-year multiple-entry non-immigrant B visa before you leave home.

Thank you all for your help, I will look at my options carefully and let you all know what I come up with in the end.

... Secondly I have a degree in "BSc Computer Systems & Networks (Hons)" ...

From what country? Not enough work there? Have you done a search through all the int'l job sites? Lotsa tech jobs, from what I see...

Seriously, I would pursue what you've already studied and come to LoS on holiday, instead...
