I am asking myself the same question.

I need a new battery for my computer, do I buy the HP one or the cheaper chinese equivalent?

I think I shall go with the branded name.

Mind you even that is no guarantee, remember the Sony battery debacle, where they were over heating.

Not exactly an answer, I know, but food for thought.

As for Canon Batteries in SLR Cameras: I have used probably over 10 or 12 BP 511 Batteries over the last 6 Years. Several were Original, most of them bought as OEM copies, the price of which were usually 20% of the Original Ones.

My resume: Almost all of the copies worked well for 2 or three Years. Just one dud.

The life span of the Canon Originals was the same.

Most copies also have a larger capacity.

My suggestion: Go with the cheaper ones! The price difference is that much that even 50% duds would set you in the positive.

Canon, Nikon, and all others don't produce Lithium Cells, they also buy them on the market.
